Handheld shower head recommendation? Login/Join

Hi, all.

We are looking to replace the shower head in our master bath with a handheld unit. Looking for something that has some added height since I’m tall (most handhelds have that), has a good variety of water modes, one where the tubing to the hand set doesn’t get in the way to much, and also helps to address the periodic relatively low water pressure in our house. What might you recommend? Any specific features I should look for? Thanks a lot.

Chris

I will note one thing that bothered me at my son's house during recent visit: the part that attached the handheld head to the shower pipe coming out of the wall did not have any way of adjusting the angle. So the spray went over my head and hit the other shower wall.

I would look for one that has a mount that slides up and down on a rod.

We have a combo unit with a Delta valve that allows one to choose between handheld and fixed head.

As far as problems with periodic low pressure: modern showers have pressure-balancing units that keep hot water constant when the toilet is flushed; but that involves changing plumbing in the wall.

I'm sure there are a lot of good choices.

I have somewhat low pressure in my house (I think about 50-55psi. I didn't need different modes because they haven't worked well (perhaps my pressure and flow rate).

I get the best result with a Toto single mode hand set (has a couple dozen small nozzles).

Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod..._title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I like our Moen Magnetic one for its ease of removing and replacing the hand held part. Put in in close neighborhood of home and it snaps on via a magnet, and stays put.

I put one in the main bath with an optional extended hose when we housed a relative for a few months while recovering from surgery 2 or 3 years ago so she could sit on a shower stool and use it.

The wife liked it so well she requested I change the one in the master to the same one.

We have the single head version, doesn't add height, but I see they also have a duel head version that does add some height, but then you have to switch between them. I have seen heads with better spray pattern options... but we have low pressure, 35-40 lb so...

Got ours at Lowes.

Installed photos.

Got the Moen Engage magnetic handheld about a year ago for the shower off the master bedroom. Has 6 settings. Wife loves it so I bought and installed a second one as a spare in an upstairs shower in case the first one dies, but so far no problems. The magnet is plenty strong. Also got them at Lowes.

I've had this Delta (or very similar) for about 4 years and no complaints. It's plastic but still no issues.

I've used the fairly cheap Waterpik hand-helds for years and they last for years.

This is my favorite handheld shower head, and I've installed it in all the showers in both my last house and my current house:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...tle_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

It's a bit pricey at ~$150, but it's one of Moen's higher tier line, which is mostly metal construction, as opposed to Moen's cheaper consumer-grade line sold in big box stores that are all plastic painted to look like metal.

It offers six different spray patterns and great coverage and pressure, if you remove the EPA-mandated flow restrictor, a small round piece of plastic in the handle of the shower head which you can just pull out with a pair of needle nose pliers while assembling it for installation. (All shower heads have this installed at the factory to meet EPA water usage guidelines, but not all are as easy to remove as Moen's.)

On a whim I bought a Kohler one while at Costco a month ago... this is a duel head.... one is permanent and is a bit higher than the wall pipe and under it is the hand held and there are three settings ...just the larger fixed head, both fixed and hand held or just the hand held.. the only draw back or at least learning curve is when going from the fixed to either of the two other positions you really want the hand held loose and pointing down for about two seconds to get rid of the cold water left in the flex hose line.

Here's a pic of the Kohler unit we had installed with our bathroom remodel a few years ago.

The bottom, stationary head is normal person height (6 foot tall or so) and the upper removable one will accommodate those well over 6' when left in the holder. It of course can be removed to more directly aim the spray which, like the stationary one, has several settings. We've been very happy with it.

When I went with Toto, this was the other top contender. I only went with Toto because of brand recognition (and associated costs). I'm interested in their low pressure handheld, just expensive if it doesn't work well. But with you vouching for it, I may give it shot next time.

This 1000%.

I haven’t had to do it in a while, but all showerheads come off and go to the drill press and get all the water restrictors removed.

Hey, everyone. Thank you for all the info and recommendations. I took the collective SigForum's wisdom and purchased a Moen Engage with Magnetix at Lowes. Easily removed the flow restrictor and installed quickly. The magnet is nice and strong, and the angle is adjustable a bit. Two thumbs up. My wife and I love it. Thanks again!

Moen makes the best but they're expensive. We've got them in all of our baths ... my young wife, especially, seems to love hers. Makes her moan (which I figure is where they got their brand name from) but I dunno.
