I've been going to the gym for most of the last 20 years, but I lost a lot during COVID.

Had my hardest workout yesterday, and it felt great! Yesterday. Kind of feeling it today, so I thought I'd do a bit of math on it.

I only do free weights and kettlebells, and am constrained by some injuries, and arthritis on what I can, and can't do. I don't think I'll ever run again, range of motion in both shoulders is limited due to tendon damage and rotator cuff tears, knees get bitchy, etc.

In any case, I walked a mile, did bicep curls, squats, floor-to-overheads, bent over rows, and crunches on an exercise ball.

All in, I did three sets, involving 225 reps, and I moved 8,295 lbs. of iron.

I know that some of you guys do that in one set before breakfast, but I'm feeling pretty good about it.

Got to keep it up.

Fight the Iron!

I've been getting after it with the Spartacus workouts. You can go to youtube and look up Spartacus 1.0 or Spartacus 2.0. Both are solid workouts. There are videos with times running and pics of the exercises. So you can pop them on the TV or your phone.

When you don't want to think about it and just put in some work. They are solid.

Yesterday my watch said I burned 650 calories in Spartacus 2.0 (Did a extra round that took it to a hour long vs 45 mins.)

Spartan looks interesting. Pushups and lunges are out, though. No hope with my injuries and joints.

Good for you, Artie!

I have been working out with my son a bit. We hired a personal trainer for him to learn how to properly strength train, and I join in. Needless to say, he takes the lead, and I follow the best I can. Hot tubs are wonderful things, that's all I can say!

Doing something, anything, will always be better than nothing so don't get down on what you cant do but be happy about what you can. Dont worry about what some people can or cant do, we all have our different milestones and as long as you are pushing yourself and improving you are on track. I'm glad you got a good workout. Keep it going!

Oh hell yes! I'm 58, and I measure against no one but myself, and I'm happy to be doing what I can do. I am way past dick measuring contests. Getting off the couch is job one, everything after that is pretty much gravy.

Good for you, ArtieS!

I fell off the wagon, after working out pretty consistently for fifteen years, when Covid hit--closing the gyms, followed by knee surgery. Then my gym permanently closed, so I built my own home gym. Been back to it pretty regularly since October 2022. I do free weights and have a functional trainer. (I've been posting about the progress of my home gym in Creating My Home Gym: Equipment Discussion)

I use the Strong - Workout Tracker & Gym Log to track my workouts.

I'm a bit off my routine, right now, because I've resumed golf swing training and I'm focusing on that until I get back into that groove, then I'll get back into my gym.

Exactly.

I often see "To be considered strong you should be able to squat <this>, deadlift <that>, press <whatever>, etc." I lift what I can lift and I'm happy to be doing that.

Last year I entered a Mammoth March 20 mile hiking event and trained for six months. Cardio, weights, body weight, etc. I was able to complete the event in under 8 hours which was my goal.

This year, I’ve added kettlebell training, sandbags, and rucking to my regular workouts. I even bought a pull up bar and can finally do some. I have another MMarch in May and I’m trying to come in under 7 hours.

I’m probably in the best shape of my life and bounced back strong from C19 double pneumonia. I had 2 hospital admissions and was wondering if I’d ever hike again.

I turn 55 this year and have become so accustomed to training that it’s hard to incorporate rest days. I’m learning more about hydration and nutrition as well as stretching.

Do something. Anything.

I'm 64.

This morning I did 1.5 miles @ 2.6 mph up a 2% grade on the treadmill, a circuit of upper body weight machines (chest press, row, lat pulldown, triceps extensions, curls), suitcase carries, sit ups, resistance bands, and wrist curls.

Typical 65 minute workout. I was in much better condition at the beginning of 2024, but an ulcer issue sidelined me for nigh on two months. I was shocked how much stamina and strength I lost in those two months, but its slowly coming back.

So take care, don't hurt yourselves, and above all, have fun.

Keep it up guys.

It's kind of frightening how much you lose with injury or illness after age 50.

Consistency is everything at this point.

Good for you 2340!

Artie,

If I recall correctly, you are into cycling. Have you rode the west Orange trail? It's a real ass kicker with the hills in Clermont.

I have been working out quite consistently for the past year. I lift weights 3 times a week and train kickboxing and jiu jitsu 3 times a week with heavy sparring on Saturday mornings. Only thing I'm missing is doing dedicated cardio but my knees won't allow me to run. I ran way too much on active duty and the pain is awful.

I've been using the Hevy app to track the non-cycling, was one of the first results & was free. Might look at the Stong app.

I started with a light circuit in January & have been slowly adding to it.
Started with just a 4 exercise set: Calf raises [40], situps [30], squats [20], pushups [10].
Added 10 to each on the start of each month [now at 60,50,40,30, respectively] & added in curls this month twice a week, doing 10x @ 20lb between each exercise.
Been on the Peloton at least 1x per week for a half hour as well. Usually get around 10 miles in 30min on there. Need to get back to running again, now that it's more temperate outside.

The Enemy's gate is down.

I am closing in, if not there already, at "Old and Slow". Been battling "injuries" from lifting for the last year or so, so no consistent effort. I started doing resistance loop bands about 6 weeks ago. Been working out 3 days a week, just switched this week from full body circuit training to a 3 day split (Chest/Shoulders/Triceps, Legs/Traps, Back/Lats/Biceps). Huge difference, no pain, no injuries (my "usual injuries" have not acted up or bothered me). Gain some size, stamina, and definition via losing weight. I will do a thread on this in a couple weeks. Keep up the effort!

Good for you Artie and nice job.

I started doing strength training last May at age 71. Now doing three workouts a week and alternate between upper body and lower body/core with at least a day in between. Just finished lower body workout a few hours ago. I have a trainer who I started with and developed my workouts and I still train with him twice a month. Never thought I would be doing pushup and pullups again. Big Grin Pull ups are assisted though but getting very close to doing a few on my own.

I just stared taking beet juice powder a few weeks ago to up my nitrate intake which helps with nitric oxide and last workout went very well. I bought some humanN saliva test strips on Amazon and they showed my saliva nitrite level was low but much improved with the beet juice powder and eating celery.

Yeah I too worry about my own progress and not what everyone else is doing. Most people there seem to be the same. Encouraging to see a few people come in on crutches or wheel chair even and they work out the best they can, that is awesome!

Setup for sets of RDLs. Being retired I can go to the gym when it usually is not so busy. I rarely have to wait for anything. Smile
