I had someone brake-check me the other day, and it got the wheels spinning about getting dashcams for my 2 vehicles. What are some things I should know about, and what brand/models would you recommend? I want something that I can easily install and maintain. Would you recommend front and rear? Or just front?

The Blackboxmycar.com site is your friend. Thinkware and Blackview are my go to’s that I have had positive experiences with. Lots of good info in the thread mentioned above.

I have a Rove R2-4K Pro and am happy with it.

It is a good price point between features/functionality and video quality.

Their hardwire kit is good too.

Keep an eye on flash-sales / package deals on Amazon for good discounts.

Oh, and their domestic based Customer Support is excellent (which is what swayed me from input on this forum).

I went with the ROVE R3, 3 Channel, and am happy so far. We got two of them. Customer support has been very good the two times I reached out to them concerning install. (We did the hardwire kit too.)

I installed myself and there was a coupon available on Amazon.

I was undecided so I purchased a Rove R2-4K, a Garmin Mini 2 for the rear & a VIOFO A129 Front & Rear. I returned the VIOFO & kept the Rove & Garmin. I used a Samsung 512K for the Rove but it would not auto overwrite. If you buy the Rove also purchase the Rove SD for compatability.

I have a Blackvue front and rear. Records in clear 4k with a good framerate. My only complaint is since I don't pay for the cloud service and added features, I have to download videos via wifi connection from my phone directly to the camera, but that isn't exactly the end of the world. I'm pleased with it. Should probably stick a bigger memory card in it so it'll hold more than however many hours it holds, but whatever. With a sim card and the upgraded service, you can get continuous cloud upload/backup, live monitoring and alerts of impacts to your phone, and pull up a live feed on your phone. I should probably also consider doing that as well.

I bought this one from Walmart to have in the Corvette as people like to crowd me. I liked it so much I bought a second for the Explorer.

Ignore what it says about needing the hardwired adaptor 'not included'. That is only if you want the always on parking protection feature enabled. It comes with everything you need for normal use. Under $50.

Based on the thread linked above, I bought a Rove 2 4k Dual.

I’ve been very happy with it.

I had a Rove 2 4K for my previous car -- the Dual was not available at the time I bought it. Worked well. When I got the new vehicle last month (I need to post some info and photos), I got the Rove Dual. Works well with the cigarette lighter power, but the optional wiring adapter that keeps the camera powered for possible hits while parked is not working properly. Might be a bad adapter, or maybe improper installation; I need to do some troubleshooting. NOT the camera's fault, I'm happy with the dual camera setup with the cigarette lighter power; I just want to get the other power option working, so I don't have a power cord dangling around in the vehicle.

I've been using the Garmin Mini 2 - no issues. Resolution isn't great - may be hard to identify plates. But it can capture who would be at fault.

I have a Garmin I bought long ago and it still works great and has never had a problem.

In another vehicle, I have a Viofo A139 Pro. It is a great camera and you can connect to it via WiFi. After 6 months, the camera stopped working and I sent it back under warranty and received a replacement that so far has worked well. As long as the Viofo keeps working, I really like this camera.

Can this be powered by an adapter wired into the back of the mirror? Like this one? Made by Dongar

I had that in the previous car. The Dongar worked well, but was powered when ignition was on. The Rove wiring adapter provides power when ignition is off, so if somebody hits the car while it is parked, you have a record of it.
