I regularly receive "checks" in the mail. These are bait sent from high-interest loan companies. They look just like a check, they are made payable to me, or to my small business, and they are usually for some random amount in the fifty thousand to sixty thousand dollar range, maybe something like $54,726.83
I was curious to see just how far this would go if I tried to deposit one, so I took it to the Credit Union and walked up to a teller whom I know. "Hi Betty (not her real name)," I said. "Can you deposit this to my account?"
She hardly gave it a glance as she started to process it. I told her to stop and check the routing number and account number on the "check."
She looked puzzled when she realized that this information was missing. There was no OCR information line at the bottom of the otherwise normal looking "check."
