One of the reasons he was as great and popular as he was. He knew exactly why people watched his show and stayed with a formula that worked. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

Johnny knew his show was an escape for people from the BS of the day. It was a place to come to laugh and be entertained. As PHPaul alluded to, that's why both he and his show were so wildly successful. The current late night morons could definitely take a lesson from the master of late night. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. I have not watched any late night talk shows since Johnny Carson retired. He was one of a kind. I sometimes catch repeats that are on a TV station in the area I live. IMO, at least Fallon does a pretty decent job of keeping it comedic as opposed to the others who simply attack and inject their politics into the show. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

He's no Johnny Carson but I agree that he tries. The rest of them are just left wing political hacks. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Colbert in particular was hired out of an explicitly political show. So I have to think that's what CBS wanted when theyou hired him.

After Leno, we watched Fallon for a while. He’s a very talented guy. After President Trump took office, we felt his show drastically changed. We tuned him out two years ago. He’s in the same puke bucket as the rest of the late night geniuses. Yes, agreed. But Fallon isn't that funny. Johnny is still the master. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Indeed he is. Here's a classic. Enjoy. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. Every man should have several guns. And several dogs, because a man with a cat is a woman. Kurt Schlichter

Not a talk show host, but the comedian who like Carson really understands what comedy is all about is Jerry Seinfeld. They are both, I think, among the funniest guys ever, "professionals" in the very best sense of the word. ______________________________________________________ "You get much farther with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone."

Paraphrased: They think that just because you (are in entertainment), you must deal with serious issues. Once you start that, you start to get that self-important feeling that what you say has great import. Does this remind you of any entertainers lately?

Carson used to make jokes about the NRA and it was obvious that he was anti-gun. As far back as 1962 when his show was based out of NYC he was preaching against guns. I do agree with him that many entertainers take themselves far too seriously-far more so than when he was alive as we see every day.
