Prepper Alert: Ice Storm of the Century heading for the South
Snowing like hell here. Plow went by about 20 min ago and you can't even see the road already. Supposed to snow the rest of the day and then change to sleet later. Looks like about 5-6" so far. Overnight temps in the single digits and highs in the teens for the next week so whatever falls will be around for a while.

Here in the Commonwealthrobbed of Virginia, in Richmond, the storm of the century has so far (10:31am Sunday 25 Jan 26) been of little concern. I shoveled a few pounds of white water crystals from the driveway and walk. The crystals do not adhere to the vehicles. The grass tops are still visible above the snow. And, the generator remains in the garage, ready for action.

Here at 7,000 ft in a Utah ski town we have green grass in the yard. Maybe 5% of the property has an inch of residual snow where it is shady.
Lowest snow pack in recorded history. Two winters ago was the opposite, with over 8 feet of snow pack in the yard by now, where we could step off the 2nd floor deck onto the snow.
This may be a terrible wildfire year for the entire mountain west.

Just got up after sleeping in late! Woot.
It’s 21° and we got about an inch of teeny tiny iceballs overnight. The boy left the bag of snow bibs in his girlfriend’s truck when he got home last night. We made him take them with him when he won’t over there yesterday just in case. She and her momma had driven him home when it first began and it’s just ice under the snow now.
Still got power tho, so I’m stoked about that.
Iirc it’ll warm up but still be below freezing (into the 20s)at night for the rest of the week.

South Nashville near Brentwood.2" of snow then ice & rain at 30 to 32 degrees. Trees are down blocking the road on my street And on top of cars that idiots parked under. Nashville electric service shows 198000 customers out of power. I have been out of power for about 3 hours now & inside temp is only down to 70.

Ice did not accumulate on the trees here in Gwinnett, it looks like it may have snowed and rained. A thin layer of ice on grass and roof
28 now and supposed to get up to 38 and back below freezing over night

Indianapolis got over a foot of powdery snow. No ice buildup yet. I just cleared the driveway and walk with a 16" high Ariens. Didn't want to start and my starting fluid can won't spray, just dribble. But I got it running.
It's still snowing and the plows haven't cleared the road much.
I'll probably have to hit it again later when the snow finally stops.

South of Nashville we have ice and more accumulating. Trees are breaking all around and we have been without power for about 2.5 hours. I haven’t fired up the generator yet but it is ready to go.

Burlington, NC here. Not much if any snow, it’s been mostly sleet and a little freezing rain. About 3/8 to 1/2 of sleet accumulated so far. It’s about 25°. Still have power.
I’m in an old house from 1957. The only hiccups so far is that the laundry room, one bedroom, and a bathroom were built out over the carport and have water and power, but no hvac. They created the ceiling of the carport by nailing plywood to the floor joists of the addition and I’m not sure they insulated much if at all. The ring flood sensors went off this am with freeze warnings because the floor in the laundry and the bathroom were below 40°. I have a space heater running with fans to circulate some air.

Switching back and forth here between powder and sleet here and falling at a fast rate. I think we’ve probably got a good 12 inches so far, I went out at like 11 am and ran the snowblower on my neighbors and my sidewalks and in just that time a good 2 inches fell.

In DFW I’ve been checking the Oncor power grid, which serves about 4.1 million, which is only half the metro. Last night the power outages were at .29%, then .24%. Slightly elevated today at .51% but when it’s not even an even 1% of the entire population in a metro that is pushing 8.5 million, it’s just not a major event concerning our grid. 92k outages for the entire state. That works out to .34% of the entire state (customers) incurring outages. Locally we have to make it until Tuesday for this to let up or alleviate but so far this “storm of the century” is appearing to be massive hype and fear mongering for the news, for clicks, etc. I hope all the got damn fucking idiots falling for this shit again clearing out all the bread, milk, eggs, toilet paper, etc, learn something but they won’t. They’ll end up pouring spoiled milk down the drain landing in the sewers and all the moldy bread will go to the landfill. Same as it ever was.
I honestly think a large part of the population enjoys misery. They enjoy something to get all hyped up about and worry about. You know younger inexperienced kids, etc is one thing. Grown adults is another. We aren’t in the sticks in Wyoming, Minnesota, etc. You are in a major metro area with kWh trucks ready to roll to fix shit. Just stay off the roads as your vehicle and tires are likely not equipped for safe travel. It’s just not hard. Oh the horror, stay home a couple of days and remain calm.

We only got about 6" so far on top of the 2-3 already on the ground. Currently sleeting, actually it's not wet sleet it's like ice pellets falling.
I took a little ride down our road on a SXS to see the stream and it's beautiful with snow.

Maybe an honest 7” deep around home in the 40299 area. The top couple inches is dense and will probably freeze solid tonight. A far cry better than the 30” Apple forecasted. We had a good snow one year ago and it hung around far too long for me with the extended cold weather like we have again this year. The roads are covered but not frozen. The metro county plows are working hard at it. Tremendous number of private plow and salt trucks traveling all about. More than I’ve notice before.

Southwest Ohio, we have a solid 9 inches. Shoveled 3 times, and it looks like it is done. It's going to stick around, due to the temps over the next week.
Thankfully, at least for us, it was not as catastrophic as we were told.
