Yes, I know you can ship a long gun via USPS. Good luck finding someone there who knows this. I sold a P226 barrel only here to a SF'er that got lost in the mail, I had insurance on it, USPS denied the claim and sent me a letter threatening to refer me for prosecution for shipping a gun without an FFL to a non-FFL. I was not an FFL at that time, but that's the level of ignorance you're likely to run into within USPS.
Good luck getting any carrier to pay a claim from an FFL, they do their best to deny until they are forced to pay. UPS requires anything over $1000 to be dropped off at a hub and the employee at the hub has to sign the paper stating it is over $1000 and insured. I rarely ship out anymore, it is too much of a hassle for low volume dealers.
Even the larger volume FFL’s self inspire and refuse carrier insurance since it is rarely paid.
