whododatEastern Colorado trip
Looking for advice on a much needed trip with our pooch. I would like to find an airbnb in the Eastern part of Colorado if anyone has any suggestions. Would love to find a cabin.
Thanks in advance.
Because son, it is what you are supposed to do.

mutedbladeWhat kind of activities are you looking for and when are you looking to go? There’s not a whole helluva lot to do/see in eastern Colorado. Some history and depending on where you go, some decent scenery, but still not a lot to do.

12GASpent a week fly fishing in Nederland with my son back in 2015. Booked a cabin at the Arapaho Ranch in Nederland and fly fished for cutties in a stream on the property. Nederland is 17 miles West of Boulder and 40 miles South of Estes Park.
It was a hoot.

whododatReally just looking to relax with some scenery. Maybe a good restaurant or two in the area would be nice. We don't mind driving at all to get somewhere nice.
Looking to go within the next month.

2000Z-71Eastern Colorado? Really? Scenery? It's flatter than a junior high school homecoming queen. About the only thing I can think of recommending is Bent's Fort in LaJunta.

whododatOkay, you talked me into it. I think the homecoming queen comment did it!
Going to look closer to the Denver, Colorado Springs area. Ideas?

mutedbladeI lived in La Junta for a while. Not much out that way except Bent’s Fort but that’s a day trip at best. If you go south of La Junta, there’s some pretty nice mesa’s with the typical high desert scrub and juniper. Plenty of wildlife in that area (pronghorn, mule and whitetail deer, elk, and bears).
Some decent cabins and views out towards La Veta or down towards Raton in NM.

bigpond73La Veta is nice. My wife works there. We live down east of Walsenburg.
La Veta is a neat little artsy town. Slow life, nice views. A couple of restaurants in town, and a brewery. I believe there are a few BnBs there. If you want a cabin, check out Raspberry Ranches. I can ask the wife for further info if you'd like, just drop me an email.

Here's a terrain map of most of the state. As you can see there is nothing but corn fields and dirt east of center.
If you want to see some of the good stuff elaborate a bit on what you'd like to do.

1967GoatAnd the drive from the Colorado/Kansas border is not fun. You're thinking, man, I'm in Colorado, mountains here I come! It's roughly 2.5 hours from the Kansas border to Denver.

OKCGeneCuchara is a nice small place, scenic, not much to do. Has lodging.

sandman76Hey there is some majesty to the plains. There are some nice little towns out there. Burlington is okay. There's a carousel there. Not much in the way of tourist shit to do but there is some history in the small towns if you're into that. I have family in eastern Colorado and I've always enjoyed spending time there.

ridewvSouth and west of Denver 2-lane Rt 50 runs along the Arkansas river. That area is scenic but not crazy touristy, and there are many little motels along there.
No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

ftttuColorado Springs/Denver/Boulder area has a lot, but just outside those towns to the west, there’s WAY more to do. My dad lives in Woodland Park, which is just west of Colorado Springs. There’s always a lot of stuff to do there. I love Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls, Pikes Peak, and Manitou Springs.

coloradohunter44Estes Park is pretty calm this time of year. Most stores are open. Definitely not the summer crowds. Eastern Colorado...very little to do...watch the wind blow maybe? Holler if you make it. I'm in Johnstown. 50 north of Denver. Can give ya more ideas....

jeffxjetYou definitely want to go to the western slope. Nothing to see or do east of I25.
I have an Airbnb/VRBO in Ouray, CO, "The Switzerland of America" It's not a cabin, but the town has the best access to "mountain therapy" And I welcome pets. Here are the links to my place, one is upstairs and one is downstairs, same house. Of course you could choose another place out there as well. It's a MUCH better choice than anything on the east side. Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Montrose, Telluride is what you might be looking for. Or Aspen, Eagle, and that area if you are into pretentious yuppie vacationers.
