Emergency dispatchers got a free rap performance over the police radio earlier this month after authorities said a man broke into a patrol car and took over the car’s handset. Shane Allen Poovey, 32, was charged with felony breaking and entering into a law enforcement vehicle and misdemeanor damage to property on Nov. 5, according to a copy of an arrest warrant filed at the Burke County Courthouse. It was shortly before 5 a.m. that day when someone started keying into one of the Burke County police radio channels, according to radio traffic obtained by The News Herald. “Breaker, breaker 10-4,” the voice said over the police radio. “Shane Allen Poovey found the wrong car. Need assistance behind the courthouse. I already explained.” He keys up again later, but most of his words were unintelligible over the radio. At one point, he appears to refer to himself as “Poovey the trainee.” Dispatchers get a group of officers headed to the courthouse, brief them on what’s happening and one official strikes up a conversation with the man on the county’s info channel. “Unit on info?” an official asks. “Detention Officer Shane Allen Poovey,” the man replies. “OK, how can we help you?” the official asks. With a lilt to his voice, the man replies with a simple request: “Assistance to get my key so I can leave the city to finish my rap story.” Several beats of silence pass, and the man makes another garbled response. “We’re still here,” the official replies. “Where are you located at?” It’s only a few seconds later that the man gives his answer: “201 S. Green St., behind the courthouse.” Officers with the Morganton Department of Public Safety seem to switch to another channel, devising a plan to surround him with two units coming toward the courthouse from East Concord Street and another pair coming from East Meeting Street near the movie theater. Before long, an officer informs dispatchers they have a man in custody and confirms his identity as Poovey. Officers discover one of the windows to a patrol car parked behind the courthouse had been broken and a uniform shirt that was inside the car was stolen, according to an incident report. The car that was broken into is one of several kept at the Burke County Courthouse for offender transport to and from the jail, said Sheriff Banks Hinceman. Deputies do not keep weapons in those vehicles overnight. Poovey seems to have had some experience with patrol cars before this performance. Records from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction indicate he has previous felony convictions of obtaining property by false pretenses/cheats/services and forgery, along with misdemeanor convictions of larceny and assault on an officer or state employee. He’s still being held at the Burke County Jail under a $10,000 secured bond for the charges connected to breaking into the patrol car. https://morganton.com/news/loc...5c1bcd24b1c86c081914 Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Well, see…we don’t catch the smart ones. Fortunately they generally like drugs. This makes things much easier overall. Except PCP…still easy to find. Just not as easy to catch. But weed… Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard. -JALLEN "All I need is a WAR ON DRUGS reference and I got myself a police thread BINGO." -jljones
