Alternative to parting out motor cycles without titles?
A friend has been on a buying spree of storage units around eastern half of the country. He's acquired several HD shovel heads which he tears down for parts resale, on line. He just got another Harley which I am told is a beauty. Most of the bikes come from auctioned off storage units and no titles. He's zooming around as I type this on a sweet black and silver CBR 600 RR which again, came without a title. He also brought back a like new R1 black and red which is without a title. He intends to break them down to sell their parts. What a damn shame. Is there not a way to get titles for the bikes? It just dont seem right to tear down perfectly good bikes in excellent condition.

My state has a process for this very thing. It involves getting a bond in case it ends up being stolen, and having to do some extra steps, but it is possible and common around here.

Yep, bonded title was my first thought.

My dad was going to start that process on a '72 Mercedes he got for super cheap, but has decided to sell it instead, as it's not likely worth the cost to get it running. It's been sitting since around 1996.

Yep he can get titles, vintage bikes bring decent money but he probably makes more off parting out..

Shame though, if it's together and running it should stay that way...

One Harley he bought was abused by the previous owners lady friend via base ball bat. It is a Limited Edition bike too. I really cant wait to see more than a picture of the R1. He states the bike is like brand new. I know its a 2009. Low milage machine. When I was younger I had such a fettish for a liquid silver R1. Wouldnt dare today.. Big Grin

Parting out can be more profitable than selling the complete bike. Friend and I used to do it as a decent chunk of our ebay business. We did mostly sport bikes.

He has bought a few smaller road bikes also. The little Route66 I believe he kept. That bike too was in beautiful shape but was stored for 8 years.

Ok, this sounds interesting. How does one go about finding such sales or auctions?

There are several ways to get a title depending on the State you're in. A storage title, from someone not paying storage on the bike. Or a mechanics lien, etc. Visit a private tag/title agency in your state and for a small fee they generally will get you a title.

I know they are advertised on line is all. This man stopped buying common units with furnitures, junk and such as he has to dispose of the entire unit. Responsible for all waste. He's done very well on many units. I recall a Boy Scout blanket with Den number and over 100 patches dating 1940s and 50s selling almost $700.00. Now he is mainly after bikes, guns, higher value items. Such is why he is willing to travel longer distances.

A friend had (has) an auto machine shop & I know for sure that he, from time to time, would keep cars & trucks he had worked on & which the owner was unable to pay the bill. ALL PERFECTLY LEGAL. Now the process may well vary from state to state, but I KNOW that in Tennessee it is absolutely possible to get a title for a vehicle without one - assuming that one has possession of the vehicle legally.....Fred
