Acting on the advice given by Sigmund in The Lair, I am posting this news here in The Lounge. I added a video to the “We Were Soldiers” thread over there, yesterday and got no response. It was Mel Gibson enthusiastically endorsing the name change; he had a chance to get to know the Moores, and obviously feels the honor was well earned. As I stated in The Lair, “I know there’s a general aversion to renaming military bases because the base honored a Confederate officer. Maybe some consolation can be taken from the fact that Lieut Gen Harold Moore was born in Kentucky, but died in Auburn, Alabama. I understand that the new name also honors the General’s wife, Julia.

Stars and Stripes. Army’s Fort Benning is now Fort Moore

I initially thought it was going to be all bad renaming the Posts. There is some expense in doing this that has not been talked about.
Renaming Benning and Rucker I think have been good.

Most bases already have nicknames. Fort Lost in the Woods for example.

I'd bet DOD paid big money to a PR firm to come up with the new names. I used to work with a guy who was part of the "Army of One" slogan. That was a huge contract with a ton of people working full time to come up with just that one slogan.

I may have an invalid DD-214, which I got at -WARNING: Hurtful name follows - Fort Lee VA way back in 1971. Will I have to repay my GI Bill? Can I still get buried in the Rock Island National Cemetery?

Fort Bragg will become Fort Liberty on June 2. After a little digging I came up with a better one IMO, Fort York, after SGT Alvin York of WWI renown. 82nd Division.

my kid went to basic at jackson, then to benning, then stationed at bragg for a long time and is currently at gordon. smh

Hal Moore would want it called Fort Benning.

I’ve read Fort Polk (where I went for BCT) will be renamed Fort Johnson next month.

Plus all their letterhead, promo items, WEB SITE (a biggie), and all the other shit that has the old name on it. When my company changed it's name there is a lot of shit that nobody thinks of until it happens.

There will be no end to it, so long as we keep catering to those who do nothing but complain.
Once enough of us regain our backbones and start learning and using "the healing power of NO" and standing up against it all, then we can begin to reclaim sanity.

But that's just my opinion.
