The U.S. military shot down an Iranian drone on Tuesday as tensions between the United States and Iran have intensified.

In late January, the Trump administration ordered the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln and a strike force into the Persian Gulf. The move raised speculation that the U.S. could carry out airstrikes against the Iranian regime.

Reuters reported that the drone “was flying towards the carrier and was shot down by a F-35 U.S. fighter jet.”

A U.S. Central Command spokesman told Fox News that the drone “aggressively approached a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier with unclear intent.”

He further explained that the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln was operating in the Arabian Sea, approximately 500 miles from Iran’s southern coast, when an Iranian Shahed-139 drone unnecessarily maneuvered toward the ship.”

This is the first military clash Washington has had with Tehran since the White House ordered airstrikes on the regime’s nuclear sites last year.

The Shahed-139 is an Iranian long-range surveillance and attack drone that can fly long distances while carrying various weapons, including precision-guided missiles and bombs. It is also used for reconnaissance missions and to attack targets on land and at sea.

The current conflict between the U.S. and Iran centers on the regime’s treatment of protesters who have been demonstrating in the streets since late December.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened military intervention against the regime if it refused to stop killing protesters.

Casualty estimates range from 3,000 to 20,000 people killed by the Iranian government.

The protests began when tens of thousands of Iranians took to the streets to protest against the regime’s economic failures, which resulted in a severely devalued currency. But the effort quickly transformed into a campaign to oust the radical Islamic regime that has controlled the nation since 1979.

The government responded with brutal force, killing, torturing, and arresting those involved in the demonstrations.

Probing to see how close they can get before we detect them and respond. Just an annoying drone poke.

Figure out where the drone originated and from where it was controlled, and take out the whole base. Repeat until there aren't any drones originating from Iran.

Funny, I can't seem to hear those "protesters" in MN criticizing the Iranian Government for killing its own citizens in the thousands.

The Sundance Film Festival just ended here in Park City. Lots of lefties of course, with it being a major indie film industry event. There were at least 2 anti-ICE protests on Main St, and at the various events there were anti-ICE comments from presenters. (And all the other usual lefty garbage).

There was a group handing out literature and with a few small signs supporting the protests in Iran against the Islamist government. They looked to be Iranian as far as I could tell. Nobody cheered for them, nobody stopped to ask them questions or show support. No comments from presenters about Iran.

A good example of the leftist double standard.

Isn't this the last year in Park City?
I have a many friends who live there and I visit infrequently, while they've enjoyed access to see some of the films and parties, they're over it. The crowds of douche-bags, the entitled & insufferable at all the restaurants, the traffic which is already bad goes up to insane during the film-fest, the various homes that are rented out and get trashed afterwards, its an absolute circus.

Back to OP-
Considering the Shahed-129 is a cheap knock-off of the US Reaper/Predator drones, that is usually armed, I'd say the shoot-down is justified. Zero reason for that platform to be orbiting around a US ship, much less an asset like an aircraft carrier.

Seems to me that a highly targeted set of strikes removing ALL the Mullahs and all the so-called Palace Guards, would neutralize the total regular military composed of conscripts. No war necessary.

This, despite my desire to leave a radioactive, glassine pit at every headquarters and military base…

I suspect accurate target selection is the part we depend on Israeli intelligence for, maybe others in the Middle East (Saudis, etc.) too.

Yes, it was the final year. Next year is Boulder, CO.

All the locals I know liked having Sundance here. Yes, many in the industry are atypical humans. And you run a high probability of seeing some very odd and offensive movies. We've walked out of several. But the energy in town is fun. Since we live here we can go to the restaurants any other time. I appreciate the benefits we get from all the dollars the tourists leave behind.

There is a group that bemoans it all. The ones that protest upgrading the lifts and parking lot. They want it to be a private hippy hangout, either poor or uber-wealthy, not to include visitors.

Sundance rents were crazy. One year we rented to a studio that only held a private meal or cocktail party there. We got something like $30k for the week! Tax free due to the Augusta rule.

We tried renting it as an Air BnB when we went on vacation but had a couple of bad experiences. People treated our home as many do a rental car.

The traffic was a big reason we moved out. Year round in town is bad, half of it being construction workers and heavy construction vehicles.
