I’ve been looking for a reason to get a Techivorm and now the opportunity has arrived....

Now, 8 cup or 10 cup.... Glass carafe or thermal carafe...

My burr grinder is brushed stainless and I’m thinking the new coffee maker should be brushed silver, but the limited time Stone Grey looks pretty sharp.

Decisions....

I bought my Dad the 8 cup Technivorm thermal carafe for father's day, and liked it so much that I bought myself one later that year. The only "flaw" was the 8 cup was a little small when company was visiting so I bought myself the 10 cup thermal carafe.

We have the 12 cup Technivorm Grand with the thermal carafe.

I actually just bought a second one because the float switch started hanging on the first. (It’s about 5 years old and this is the first problem I’ve had.)
Rather than being without while getting it serviced, I figured it was worth it to get a backup.

The thermal carafe will keep it as hot as made for a good hour plus and is easy to move around if you want to take outside, another room, etc. It will still be drinkably hot after a couple hours. That's my vote in 10 or 12 cup size.

You'll love the machine.

What size was the Bonavida? ... was it usually too much or not enough? Answers should help figure the Technivorm size.

I have no experience with the glass carafe and only have a couple of thermal carafes. My thinking was that a glass carafe might just sit there and overheat the coffee if it sits for some time, but that is just a guess ... or heat down to crud if not watched and forgotten about, but that too is just a guess. So with a thermal carafe, sometimes I allow it to sit too long and the coffee cools. I pour a cup and nuke it in the microwave for 15 seconds when need be.

Get the glass carafe, it’s easier to clean.

Pour your freshly made hot coffee into a thermos or a thermal pump top dispenser whatchamacallit thing and dispense from it.

Oh, get the Technivorm Moccamaster.

My viewpoint comes from me currently owning 2 Technivorms, one each glass carafe and metal carafe thermal pot, a Bonavita metal carafe, and pretty much every other variety of coffee maker.

Get the Technivorm.

^^^^ I do yhat when I use my French Press. I'm leaning towards the 8 cup thermal carafe this time. Haven't had one yet so maybe its time to be different.

Who cleans the carafe? That just wipes away the flavour Wink

We have the Technivorm Moccamaster with the thermal carafe. It keeps the coffee plenty hot, especially if you pre-heat it. We run hot water in the carafe and swirl it around a time or two, right before we brew. I’ve read that some of the coffee purists believe that the coffee burns, and harms the taste, if it’s left in a glass carafe on a hot plate. I have no idea if that’s true.

Maybe I shouldn’t admit this, but we never wash the inside of the carafe. We rinse it out with hot water after it’s empty...that’s it. My buddy told that you can use dishwashing detergent and boiling water to clean it. I haven’t tried it yet. I’d compare that to scrubbing the seasoning off my cast iron pan. Not gonna do it.

I vote for the Technivorm Moccamaster. I have had mine for many years, the thermal carafe works great. I have the 10 cup. They are smaller cups and if I want less coffee, I just scale down the water and coffee amounts.

The Technivorm with Eldorado Springs water (never distilled and not well water) and good coffee and the day consistently starts well.

The guy who taught me how to operate my new Technivorm learned me to run a pot of water thru it first for the best brew. He said you want to get everything "good and hot". Jack owned eight coffee shops at the time, I did setups for him at conventions, and he gave me a (discontinued) plain white Mochamaster with glass carafe. It still works, the plastic started crapping out, I swapped in brown trim off a donor machine, but eventually went to a pour-over. Almost 20 years later, it still makes a fast perfect cup of coffee.

^^^^^^^^^^ To clean a metal carafe, thermos or similar, first rinse it in hot water to warm it up. Pour that out, add a good amount of Cascade Dishwasher Powder (NOT LIQUID) and HOT water. Shake and swirl and whirl it for a minute. If you have a bottle brush to fit use it. Let it sit awhile and let it work. Rinse and repeat. This method was given to me by a Technivorm Rep and it works really well.

Shouldn’t there be a “You will buy a Technivorm Moccamaster” thread?

Now that you've received good answers to your question, how did the wife actually break it?

^^^^^. Well, since you insist.

Our house is up for sale and we had a showing we were getting ready for. Our realtor told us to clean off the counters so the people walking thru can imagine their stuff on the counters. So my wife took the initiative to put the coffee maker in the pantry but dropped it and broke the reservoir. She didn’t realize the top of the coffee maker is only snapped on and it fell apart in her hand.

This sounds rather clutsy but she is two weeks out of hip surgery and was using a crutch to get around. She’s very much a type A personality and does not do well sitting around doing nothing. I can’t fault her for helping but she is still supposed to be using two crutches right now.

Overall it’s okay as I was looking for a reason to get the Technivorm Wink

Oh and one other consideration I guess. A glass carafe could break if mishandled or slipped. The thermal carafe will never break. Might ding but won't break.

Surprised he didn't advocate the use of one of the popular espresso machine cleaners (e.g. Cafiza, Joe Glo, Jura, etc.). They work great.

Be very mindful of how fragile the glass technivorm is. I broke mine while washing it out in the sink. On another note a mr coffee carafe from Walmart fits in its place for $10 vs $40. One of these days I’ll buy the correct one.
