Charges have been upgraded against a man who authorities say struck an off-duty police officer with a vehicle at his home earlier this week.
Gregory Martin Hill, 54, was initially charged with second-degree assault in the Tuesday attack on Decatur Officer Jack Brown.
On Thursday, police said Hill is now charged with attempted murder.
The incident happened at 5:17 p.m.
Decatur police spokeswoman Irene Cardenas-Martinez said the officer was at his home with his family in the 2200 block of 11th Street S.E. when Hill approached the officer’s residence on 11th Street S.W. in Decatur.
According to charging documents against Hill, Brown noticed a black Jeep Wrangler stationary in front of his home and asked the man – later identified as Hill – if he needed assistance.
Hill began to curse at Brown and then backed out and hit a car on 11th Street.
As Brown made his way to the end of the driveway, Hill attempted to run over the officers and instead struck a tree next to the driveway.
Brown retreated into his home to get his gun and handcuffs, with Hill chasing after him, the affidavit states. The officer exited his residence with his duty weapon and ordered Hill to get on the ground, which Hill refused to do.
“Hill got back into his vehicle and Officer Brown attempted to get him out of the driver’s seat,’’ the report states. “Instead, Hill drove directly into Officer Brown, who discharged his weapon into the Jeep numerous times.”
Brown was pushed almost the entire length of the front yard, police say. Hill then backed up and ran over Brown’s legs.
Hill then exited the vehicle and was subdued by Brown and a civilian who witnessed the ordeal.

bronicabillThat is insane, and I'm surprised I never heard about it since I live about 15 minutes east of Decatur!

Because it happened in 2022.
link " A trial date has been set for a Decatur man indicted for attempted murder after he hit an off-duty officer multiple times with a Jeep in 2022, court documents say.
Court documents show a new jury trial date has been set for Gregory Martin Hill. He was arrested after doorbell footage showed Jack Brown, an officer with the Decatur Police Department, being hit by a Jeep in his front yard on August 16, 2022."

<<snip>>
Well, I've lived in the same house since 2015, so I still think I should have heard about it on the news, or on the Book of Faces!

Brown is officially one tough, dedicated, hard fighting, SOB. You go, dude, mad respect. That is the epitome of "never give up the fight"!

220-9erWith all due respect, the guy's got his police car in clear view of the world next to the street. He wasn't carrying any sort of protection and had to run inside to get a hand gun, gave the guy not one but two chances to run him over.
I'll sort of give him the first one, that was unannounced. But the second, the moment the guy started the car should have been lights out. He amazingly survived that one too. At least two of his nine lives gone.
Hope that perp never sees the light of day again.

I was rooting for the officer to shoot him through the side window when he put his keys in ignition. Brains on the passenger seat would've been the right outcome.
I blame the liberal DAs, liberal judges, and chicken shit police administrators for giving officers 2nd thoughts in pulling the trigger on someone who already tried to kill them and is either fleeing or gearing up for round 2.

Or actual skill with a pistol will also work.

PrefontaineIf you step back, and I realize this is 3 years old, but if you step back, and hit pause in life. You then can have some clarity and realize how utterly fucked up our society is. I mean in what world are you living in to try, multiple times, to run over and kill a LEO, no matter how skilled or unskilled he is, and get away with it? That guy in the Jeep is insane. You just want to give up your whole life on that bullshit and spend the rest of it in jail, with hardcore criminals who will make you their bitch? I’ve quit trying to understand it all. It’s all gone Pete Tong.
What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

He was the only guy in the movie less capable than the cop.
He did actually run him over, not once but twice, yet still didn't complete the job.
Yes, he clearly is some sort of crazy and I'm not slamming the officer for being one.
Just the total lack of skills and judgement.
Hopefully the victim's found a different line of work. I'd hate to see a member of the public having to stake their life on his work.

patwI don't know about the guy being insane, as I call people like that plain old evil. As a police officer, I am surprised he did not have a gun on him to begin with. Most of the cops I know and live next to always have something on them for the off chance of something like this happening.
I am glad to see the officer was alright, as the scum driver had nothing but evil on his mind and there was no getting around it.
