Lawnmower Advice

I have been pleased with my Milwaukee. It has plenty of power and I can use the batteries in my other Milwaukee tools. I have made it through two seasons mowing with it (which is about 10 months a year in South Texas).

I have an old Snapper hi-vac mower, probably late 1980's, 4hp B&S engine. Bought it used, cheap. Thing just chugs along, even if I abuse it. Simply doesn't want to die. I have another 1990's 5hp as a back up that just collects dust waiting it's turn.

If you don't mind old or rebuilt mowers, it is one to consider.

I would look on Craigslist for a used mower. Some people are moving and can't take the mower with them.

I found a free Murray mower at a storage facility that lasted many years until the deck rusted out.

Yeah I should have said "can move faster than I like" it's adjustable from crawl to fast. The rear bagger works good, easy to remove and clean out.

Honda gas with the ability to mulch.
I bought one several years ago on Marketplace for half of new (about a year old) and it's been bulletproof.
Lots of places to get replacement parts and little is needed beyond oil changes and sharpening or replacing the blades.

I had one of these for 8 or 9 years, the wheel height tabs started breaking off then the hydrostatic unit went out. Took it back to get repaired and the dealer offered me $350 for it. Said he could sell it same day after repaired. So I bought a new one same model its now 3 years old. I might buy another, still in the crate, so I have a replacement.

I did extensive research on this 5 years ago and ended up buying a Honda HRX-217 which is a beast of a mower and I love it. I merrily plows through tall grass, wet grass, thick grass, sticks, leaves and the nut debris from my neighbor's hickory tree and laughs. The battery mowers just don't have the power like a good gas engine does.

It's got a polymer deck that will never rust and a special double blade that minces the grass so finely when you mulch and not bag that you hardly even see it.

I thought Honda was exiting the residential gas mower biz though? I've also always heard good things about the Toro Personal Pace gas mowers too.

I'm totally fine with electric lawn equipment, all my trimmers and blowers are Makita. For a small yard I think an electric mower is good but if yours takes an hour then a gas Honda all day. Having said that, mine used to take 2 hours with a gas Honda 21", and that was just too long. I upgraded to this hot rod and haven't looked back:

I have a 1/2 acre lot.
Went with the Ryobi Whisper when we moved in.
Also got the leaf blower.

Mower came with 2 big batteries, blower with 2 smaller ones.
Before we had the pool put in, it took all 4 batteries to get the yard done. Post pool, 3-3.5 depending on how thick it is.

I usually start with the big batteries, then get those charging & switch to the smaller batteries to finish up, which usually gives me a fully charged large battery to use in the blower to clean up.

Planning on getting the matching weadeater, but my 2-stroke Stihl still works very well.

Before the Milwaukee I bought a real Honda push mower, the one you had to buy from a Honda dealer. It was about $800 back then, had dual blades - do not recall the model number. I did not want to get one from a box store, I wanted the real deal.

I had problems with the self propel mechanism from the get go. Yes, it was covered under warranty but I stopped taking it to them for repair. The self propel never stopped working, but I would have to mess with it to get it working. No more Honda for me after that. One and done.

I've had Ryobi 40v electric mower since 2019 and love it.

I live on a 1/3 acre lot and it does just fine.

I also have a Ryobi 40v blower and weed eater with attachments and they have been fantastic as well. They're clean, relatively quiet, and I never have to mess with cleaning carbs.

I have the Honda as well but my hydrostat unit leaked or the fluid broke down, whatever it is happens. The issue was slower and slower top speed and more noise every season for a few years. I started to feel like I was thrashing it so I finally did the YouTube video repair for changing and topping off the fluid. A lot of parts to disassemble to get at it. The drive seems to work fine for now. The starting battery only lasted a few years as well. Everything else about the mower has held up very well. I would buy another.

I live in a small town. I walk several miles everyday. I walk thru both residential and commercial ares. I have seen and talked to a bunch of people with electric mowers. They are all happy. No gas, no oil, push button start. They all have 2 or more batteries and can finish their yards. I would be very open to an electric mower.

Another Honda here. 10 years trouble free. Still has original battery,
Has never needed a charge. Starts up first try every spring.

Another Honda vote ! We have a self propelled mower that has been a true workhorse. Starts quickly and does a great job.
