We live in the DFW area of Texas, just for reference...not on a well. We use to have a filtration system at a previous house we owned, like 14 years ago. I remember it costing a fortune I’m embarrassed to say. In looking around online, it seems comparable systems can be had for under $1500 these days from Pelican and Aquasana. I’m not a fan of “soft” water, just want clean water. I hate taking a shower with soft water and never being able to tell if the soap is off Big Grin
So, what are y’all’s thoughts on them? Who’s do you use at your house? Good, bad, indifferent? I ordered a water test kit to see what if anything is exactly in our water, it’ll be interest to see the results.
Thanks!

We are on a well and have an in house filter system. It is located just prior to our water softener. I change out the filter about once a month. I like it. They are a simple install.

I have something similar on the main line before my softener. It’s simple and cheap.

The water at my new house is very clean, but this system caught a TON of sediment at my old place.

The vast majority of your water is most likely flushed down the drain (dishwasher, toilet, washing machine).

What are your goals for the system? Just basic sediment removal? Other contaminants?

I installed an under counter RO system for drinking water (we have high radionuclides/gross alpha in our water). Cost about $200 with me installing it.

Frankly, I just want the cleanest and best tasting water possible. I just ordered a test kit from these guys to see what’s in our water.

You’re probably right about most of it going down the drain though

Pure Water Products up in Denton have taken care of me over the years. They carry the consumables for a decent price too.

Yup. Ours is very similar to the one you reference. Mine probably doesn't need to be changed every month but I guess I do it out of habit.

When I lived in eastern NC, we had a “green sand” filtration system. (Potassium Permangenate)The only chemicals used after install was a giant chlorine tablet that I bought for $135 a 5 gallon bucket..said bucket lasted over a year. Keeping it topped off with bleach used in the backwash cycle was the extent of work I had to do.

The water was full of iron, such that it would stain the driveway and tasted like blood.

My dad provided the system, parts and install so I have no clue how much it cost. But he used the green sand vs salt for the backwash because it was cheaper in the long run.

Also, I didn’t dump the backwash into my septic system like my neighbors did and I never had a septic problem like all of them. They had to get the septic pumped often due to the salt killing he septic.

Made my own out of two whole house filters, two 1/4 turn ball valves, a backing board and a fluid filled 100# pressure gauge.

Mount it where you can see it, where spills aren't going to be a problem because they make a mess at filter change and go chest high so you can unscrew the filter housings without difficulty.

I use a 5 micron spun for gross filter and 2 micron charcoal for chemical filter.

Made a HUGE difference when we had the MTBE issue in our drinking water @ '98 ~ '99.

No problem, your water company might have water quality reports online.

I would check out the systems offered by Pure Earth. I use the counter top model. Jeff has good prices and lots of technical information on his site.

I installed a WaterTech system which uses a resin column about 3’ high and also a GAC filter bed.

My system does a backwash about every 1500 gallons and it’s set to run at 230am.

In five years I’ve replaced the GAC once.
