One time my aunt and uncle didn't talk to each other for a month. Turns out he told her he was going to do some work on the ditch, and she heard him call her a bitch.

I very often don't put in my hearing aids until I've showered, so my wife and I have amusing conversations like that almost daily. I think SHE needs to get HER hearing tested, but that's another topic altogether.

I read this one out to my wife. She says she wants an empanada now.

Although I used to live like that.

That said, when I used Costco's Kirkland hearing aids, I only wore them when I thought I needed them.
Never wore them when home alone.

After getting a good pair of Octicon hearing aids, I put them on in the morning and take them off at bedtime.
It avoids a lot of stuff like that with the wife.
She benefits from my hearing aids even more than I do.

Now, when talking with my Dad he says 'what' for 5 minutes and then remembers to put his cheap hearing aids on.
It's pretty annoying, and I now realize what my wife went through for years with me..

How do they compare to the Costco aids in terms of filtering background noise, like in a restaurant?

How does the cost compare? I paid $1799 for a pair of Jabra hearing aids at Costco, plus another $40 for molded ear inserts. I do not have insurance coverage for hearing aids, it's all out of pocket; don't know whether VA will cover any of the cost, I have never used VA for any medical benefits, and I have no idea whether I'm covered, don't even know where to start an inquiry.

Find the Veteran's Service Officer for your area. The VSO will walk you through the necessary steps.

I should preface this with I have high end hearing loss.
I hear lower frequencies fine, it's the upper stuff, like womens voices, I have a hard time with.
I also have tinnitus; I have a 5KHz tone 24/7/365.
My hearing aids don't really do anything for that.
I don't even notice it unless I think about it or I'm in a totally silent environment.

As to the HA sound, they are above and beyond, better than the Costco Kirland 10 HAs I had.
I first had Kirkland 8 with the regular battery.

The wind noise with the Costco HAs in even the slightest breeze was unbearable.
The octicon there has to be a stiff wind for me to even notice it.
In large groups, they aren't perfect, but I can direct the pattern to focus on things in front of me and lower the volume for background noises.
No HA will rid of background noises entirely.

These HAs really shine just from day-to-day living.
I no longer say 'what' or 'huh' to my wife when she speaks to me, even if she is in another room.
I did when I first got them, but realized it was simply a habit that I developed over the years.
When she, or anyone else, talks to me, I just give it a second, and I understand what they are saying.
I don't sit at a table just nodding my head, not having any idea what people at the table are saying, like I used to.
I can hear them 90% of the time.

Another plus of the Oction are the battery charge will last for 34 hours.
I charge them every night, but I was lucky to get 12 hours out of the Costco HAs, and I was working 14-hour days.

I was very lucky that my insurance covered a large portion of my HAs.
Although the Oticon Intent hearing aids have 4 levels, the top one I got was $6K, my out-of-pocket was $2400.
I'm not sure how much the lower-tier levels cost.
I've been trying to get my Father to look into it, for the sake and sanity of my Mother, but he just tells me he will.

They are not cheap by any means.
But anyone that ever told me that cheaper HAs work just as well as expensive HAs, never had expensive HAs.
I ended up getting mine at my ENT audiologist's office.
They gave me much better pricing and service than the HA stores that only want to push a certain brand of HAs.

I know there are online sales that are even cheaper in price, but I'm not sure how they go about programming the HAs selling them online.

I have Oticon Intents as well. I find that if my wife does not speak TO me I really don't comprehend what she is saying.

You may not fully understand what’s being said, (typically changing consonants in your brain) but it is MUCH harder on the person you are trying to talk to.

Automatic response of 'what?' or 'huh?' was a hard habit to break.
The worst part for me was nodding my head in groups, pretending to be attentive when I couldn't understand anything they were saying.
I'm pretty sure over the years, some people thought I was ignoring them when actually I never did hear them.

Also, I've tried multiple times to explain to my wife the difference between high-frequency loss and total hearing loss.
I could hear things she didn't hear.
As well, trying to explain to her in a loud environment, even with HAs, my brain focuses on the background noise instead of whoever is talking.
She still doesn't seem to understand that.

As the old saying goes, when I first got HAs, and then when I got these HA's;
The good thing is that I can hear better.
The bad thing is that I can hear better.
