I love how this thread is about 18 year olds being able to buy handguns but half the posts are about drinking.

There are some dumb motherfuckers running around at 18. And then there are some very responsible, good head on their shoulders , 18 year olds.

When I send my kid off to college , assuming they are the second (responsible) type , I would prefer that they be able to own a handgun if they want. As I understand Florida law, an 18 year old can legally possess and own a pistol, they just can’t buy one at a gun store. (Unless the laws changed in the last few years)

Same is true in CA. I think the P320 that he had been shooting was my son’s favorite gift on his eighteenth.

Or vote until you were 21. Although I don't remember if you could buy a handgun if you were 18 back in 1966 for example. I think you could.

If 18 year olds are adults, it’s a law which becomes legally difficult to defend. If 18 means they are minors, who have been granted the right to consent, sign lifetime contracts, vote, abd be tried as adults, it may be different… Though my gut says that difference would be more at the state law, abd the feds wouldn’t be able to restrict rights in that fashion.

I was 18 and I remember it well. If you have children, you know damn well that it's best that the drinking age is 21 in this country!

Of course 'some' NEVER grow up/mature, and the evidence is EVERYWHERE!

That said, maybe we should drift the thread back towards the original discussion regarding the purchase of handguns by 18-20 YO's....Which IS a right enumerated by the US Constitution!

Regardless of the topic, at 18 you are an adult. As an adult, you are free to enjoy the benefits and consequences of making your own decisions regardless of what they might be.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."
