Cell company decides to up grade my service without telling me. I had to email my wife to see if she could find out what is going on. She found out they they are upgrading my service and are not sure how long it should take.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an inexpensive basic cell phone with a basic plan just in case this happens again.

With the advent of e-sims now on many new phones, you might consider just adding an e-sim along with your primary Sim and just manage one phone. That's assuming your phone supports embedded Sims of course. Or dual sims.

Check out a cell phone store and not the big company name/sponsored type..... depending on how much service required a pay as you go plan might be a option with unlimited calls/text/etc... $20 / $30 a month and if phone not up to current standards the maybe around $100..... good luck finding something that works for you. .............................. drill sgt.

Thanks. Not sure what e-sim is.
My phone has a slot for a sim card so as far as I know my phone only supports 1 Sim card.

What service do you have now and what are they upgrading? What phone do you have now and how old is it? Is it a carrier phone or is it unlocked?

I have Boost and I am not sure what the upgrade is for.

I have a Galaxy A32 5g phone and it is about a year and a half old.

As far as I know it is a carrier phone so it's not unlocked. I did buy it outright from the Boost store so there is no monthly payment plan on the phone if that helps.

My wife and I are very happy with Boost. This is the first time anything like this has happened in the almost 10 years we have had them. I am just looking for a back up phone in case something like this happens again.

Thanks

Since the phone is probably carrier locked, you won't be able to get just a prepaid sim card to slip into it to use a different service. For a cheap phone and service to use temporarily, I would just get a Tracfone from Walmart.

They should unlock your phone if you request it.

Thanks, as soon as my wife gets home we might take a ride to see what they have.

Who, Boost or what ever company I look at? I have an older phone however I was told it was older technology so I guess it can't be used so I might have to buy a cheap phone to go with a plan.

I was going to look at the Tracfone as Paten suggested tonight however I was also just looking Mint Mobile. I might also go to Best Buy since it's near my house.

Thanks

Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do.

I would go to the Boost store and find out what he'll is going on before buying another phone &u service.
How long has your phone been disabled?
I have never heard of a phone being disabled for more then a couple of minutes for an update.

My wife is going to call Boost again when she gets home. As far as I can tell it has been with out service since Noon today.
When she called earlier they said they were upgrading my service on their end so not sure how long it should take.

Thanks

Since the T-mobile/Sprint merger, Boost has been sold off and I think they are moving off of the combined network. You probably need to get a new phone to use on Boost. Why they aren't just telling you that I don't know.

Not sure whats going on. My wife has Boost and the same phone as I do. Her boost upgraded months ago and she did not have any problems. Her phone has been working all day with no problems.

My phone was upgraded about a year and a half ago to a new phone because my old phone would not work on the new network.
They sent me a letter letting me know my phone would not work after a certain date. I would hope if this were the same situation they would have notified me.

My wife is on the phone now trying to find out what is going on.

Thanks

Well here it is Sundays night and still no phone service. After almost 9 hours on the phone with customer service over 3 days, all they keep telling me is I am caught in between some sort of transition from my old account to my new account.

So we went out and bought a Tracfone from the Best Buy near our house. Activation was easy and it even gave me a local area code, by the way thanks Paten for the heads up on them. Cost was very reasonable for a basic Samsung smart phone with an unlimited talk and text plan and 2Gb of data for 30 days.

So now all I can do is wait, but at least I have a phone for the month.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Little late now but if the phone still worked on wifi you could use google voice when within wifi range. It allows you to call and text with a new number. Obviously it doesn't help if you're not in an area with wifi.

Boost is (or was) very expensive for what you get. I used them for 10 years and was generally happy with the service. But they flat out refuse to unlock phones (or did) and that was a turn off, plus their cost was too expensive comparatively.

First, are you over age 55? Mint, Verizon, T-Mobile, and and others offer cheaper unlimited plans for age 55 and up.

If you have comcast xfinity internet or TV, you can get xfinity mobile plans for cheap. Uses verizon towers, so very good. My unlimited plan is $45 and the two kids cell phones (minimal use) adds $10 to the bill, so $55 for three phones. If you use limited data, you can get a cell plan for $15 per month.

T Mobil was a rockstar during the last hurricane, while Verizon shit the bed. My next cell plan might be T Mobil.

I'm glad you found what you needed.

Next time you talk to a customer service rep, ask how long you have to be without phone service before they recognize there is a problem and someone has to get off their ass and do something? At the very least they should be adjusting your bill so they aren't charging you for the days you've been without service.
