gw3971USS Doris Miller
Very cool. Glad he gets a ship named after him.

GaryBFCBS just ran a segment on him on its Sunday morning magazine program.

Jimbo JonesHe was also portrayed in Tora! Tora! Tora!
The naming of the ship after him is a terrific tribute.

VonFatmanmr. jones is correct...i remember his portrayal in tora, tora, tora
a very brave man.

RHINOWSOPreviously there was a USS Miller (FF/DE-1091), a Knox-Class Frigate (originally Destroy Escort) named after him but the status / importance of having a US Aircraft Carrier with your namesake cannot be overstated. That is typically reserved for US Presidents and historic namesakes (ie, USS Enterprise, etc).

Agreed. I'd say on par with growing up with a first name of Jacklyn...

That's correct; I had almost forgotten FF 1091.
If I'm not mistaken, in my DVD series of "Victory at Sea", there's a depiction of Petty Officer Miller firing on the attacking aircraft.

corsairMiller is most deserving to have a ship named after him, the new class of FFG(X) I thought would have been more appropriate and in-line with past precedent, since naming of surface combatants (DD & FF) was always named after USN/USMC heroes. I'm not going to get too wrapped around the axle about this though, as it's swinging the pendulum in the right direction, given the prior era of questionable ship naming decisions by SecDef Mabus.

bald1A great huge about face from the bullshit of naming ships after the likes of Harvey Milk. Miller was a real hero. Milk... Gesh

Certifiable member of the gun toting, septuagenarian, bucket list workin', crazed retiree, bald is beautiful club!
USN (RET), COTEP #192

PD^^^^^
That was my initial reaction but USS Miller is preferable to the USS Clinton or USS Obama.
January 19, 2020, 03:24 PM
spunk639Or the USS Gaby Gifford, thank God that administration is out. This is a fitting honor for a hero.

P220 SmudgeThis is a high honor for the man. I couldn't quite pin it down until Rhino pointed out that carriers are named for Presidents and other famous ships. Good. I'd say Dorie Miller is absolutely worthy of it as well. He went above and beyond what was asked of him to help his countrymen.

satchAn article about him in Legion magazine that he also saved the life of the wounded captain of the ship he was on, and carried him off the ship, besides shooting at Japanese planes.
January 19, 2020, 04:47 PM
Stretchdeputy1Much more deserving of the honor than some who have ships named for them.
January 19, 2020, 05:19 PM
RHINOWSOI prefer warships to be named for warriors / heroes, aside from some of the historic names like
"Enterprise",
"Constitution",
"Wasp",
"America" or specific battles like the
"Tarawa Class" for some amphibious ships, etc. Even the silent service naming Submarines for States / Cities is cool.

dave7378USS Dorie. I like it. Seemingly common men who do uncommon things.
