Give the guitar a go. Playing the guitar is one of those hobbies and professions which are hard to master, but look pretty cool from the outside. Good of you to ask about having a hobby. However, there is so much more to this instrument that is often overlooked. You'll get what I mean when you start playing.

So how is everyone’s playing coming along?

I recently completely re-wired the guitar I started with in the 80s. Very playable again.

I’ve been playing for quite a few years now, and pretty seriously for 4 years or more. I have used a couple different paid subscriptions and a number of the free sites. I find that I’m afflicted with, “Oh look a squirrel!” syndrome. I start working on a piece of music I want to learn, maybe even get the mechanics of it down, but not yet playing at tempo—then I run across something else I want to learn, then something else...

After a long search, I finally found a guitar teacher, and I really like him. He has a full blown studio at his home and can play multiple instruments. He recognized that I knew a lot of “stuff” e.g. chords, scales, basic music theory, but lacked the ability to properly coordinate right and left hand. He has me just noodling around with an unplugged guitar while watching tv; something that was mentioned in this thread.

The other thing he has done with our lessons is just jamming together. He has an incredible computer connected sound system in the studio. We’ll put on a backing track and just play. Both the backing track and the guitars are LOUD. He explains that it’s important to avoid over thinking music. Feel the music, feel the tempo, and express yourself with your guitar.

We just meet every-other week, so the cost is affordable (as opposed to some teachers). I’m not a Joe Bonamassa type gear hoarder, nor could I afford to be. I have a few guitars and I keep trading around and upgrading when the opportunity arises.

Been playing for several years, couch player. With all my rifle matches being cancelled spending more time playing. Guitar is a great valve for me. I try to learn a song a week. Working on this, like this version/tuning.

Being a big Jethro Tull fan, I've been learning a few Ian Anderson songs; Life is a Long Song, Mother Goose and Wondr'ing Aloud. He's a very good player! That shit is hard!
