I imagine for some of them they're enjoying the misery, at least until it gets a little past real.

I was thinking more like Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester (10 inches a week for a month) and Okinawa, but your point is also well taken.

You may be closer to the mark. I just happen to watch "They Shall Not Grow Old" last night so WWI was simply fresh on my mind.

This article mentions that organizers, etc. hope that the situation improves around noon local time today but ask folks to delay leaving until tomorrow.

It looks like something out of a Mad Max movie:

Drone footage from DailyMail.com showed snaking crowds of vehicles inching their way slowly across the sand as they made for the exits on Monday afternoon.

Some tried to cut in front of each other while others swerved in the mud to avoid crashing, with reports of patience running thin throughout the gridlock.

Tempers frayed during the hours-long line of RVs and campers on the way out of the Nevada desert, with cops warning many had turned hostile towards each other.

What I've learned about the desert after living here going on fifty years:

The desert is a beautiful and awe inspiring place to visit. Alone, or with one or two friends. Seventy thousand assholes negate this effect.

The desert can be a dangerous place. Everything that lives there has its own natural protection. You don't. Act accordingly.

The desert becomes extremely dangerous to human life in a downpour. What seems like relatively little accumulated rainfall elsewhere becomes volatile very quickly in the desert. It's not unusual for a flash flood to occur miles away from any rainfall. That deluge comes down off the mountains and can quickly tear up anything in its path.

That being said, you could not pay me enough to endure a "festival" in those conditions, or any other.
