I cannot believe I didn’t know of this shipwreck and infamous mutiny. It’s like a damn real life Lord of the Flies and I never knew about it until today!

This is an incredibly well done video covering a fascinating example of one of if not the worst mutiny’s in seafaring history.

If you are remotely interested in sailing stories, pirates and stories of survival you will probably enjoy his. I sure did! Smile

I realize it isn’t a short video by internet and especially YouTube standards but it is well worth the time.

Unless you're a shipwreck buff, not sure how you're supposed to know. Confused

These stories of isolation, survival and confrontation during the age of discovery I think is going to spike next year.

There's another story, about a British ship HMS Wager, which wrecked rounding Cape Horn, the survivors make it ashore, then a mutiny. Varying tales of murder and how the survivors make their way back to England to which some are courtmartialed is another adventure. Scorsese and DiCaprio are going to make a movie about it.

Some of it is EXACTLY like Lord Of the Flies. As someone who reads about pirates and shipwrecks a bit it flew under my radar. It’s the wildest story I’ve ever seen pertaining to a ship wreck with quite a few twists I didn’t see coming.

Thanks I added it to my "video folder" for when I'm looking for something to watch for 1/2 hour.

Yes, a horrifying maritime tale indeed. I've known about it for some time.

I like Simon Whistler's take on it:

The first time I heard of it though was a Casefile (podcast) episode. It is more in depth than the video versions and gives a more horrifying account.

Thanks Balzé Halzé I’ll check it out later on today.

The people who sailed in those wooden ships with very crude equipment and no real way to accurately get weather forecasts were incredibly brave.

I’ve just about finished a book that contains 45 yacht losses at sea told by their skippers. The book has had quite an impact on me and has even managed to give me a few very uncomfortable dreams of being on a ship as it goes down.

I was shocked at the number of yachts that were lost in the book over seemingly simple things like paper labels on canned food coming off when submerged and then clogging bilge pumps. Eek It’s a book that makes me look at sailing quite differently. So far only one boat has managed to be salvaged and rebuilt but then again the book is titled “Total Loss” so I should not expect it to be anything but one catastrophe after another.

The one boat that sank and was later recovered was deemed a total loss by insurance but due to the shallow water where it sank and its sentimental value the owner elected to buy it back from the insurance company and painstakingly rebuild it. That was the only happy part of a book that has been a bit of a downer so far.
