Yesterday was the final shift of my public safety career. In the 43 years I have worked as a Vol. FF- Paid Firefighter - Firefighter/ Paramedic- Police Officer - Police Detective - Fire Lt /Capt and BC. It was a weird day for me as it was filled with many "Last Times" It started with the Fire Chief pulling up to mu house in a 1945 Seagraves open cab fire engine as lightning was seen in the distance. Two SUV's followed, with 4 Batt Chiefs and the Assist. Chief. I went to my first call on this truck when it was a reserve engine when I started. (it was 32 years old then) . I was chauffeured to my station as the rain started. I was met with a large breakfast by the off going crew. A luncheon at 11:30 with the family. Flowers and a gift basket for my wife, followed by drive by well wishing by friends and co-workers over my career. The dispatch gods were good to us and we were not up all night. My organization is not huge. About 120 members that cover 70 sq miles and run 14,000 calls a year. 15 minutes prior to going off shift the Chiefs were all back and the Truck company presented me with the flag that flew at my station. The membership donated 740 hours of sick leave to max out my accrued sick leave hours. The hours convert to dollars into my HRA account. This will cover medical expenses for my wife and I until medicare age. I am also thankful be being able to go out on MY terms. The last few years were questionable with 2 bouts of cancer and a recent run of A-Fib. I have had an incredible career, and never felt like I "had" to go to work. I got to go to work. I am thankful to my awesome organization and membership. And finally I was presented with a Henry all weather lever action rifle in 45/70. All in all it was a good day, Still kinda weird. I didn't need a watch anyway, I'm retired. "It's a Bill of Rights - Not a Bill of Needs" The World is a combustible Place

Best of luck in what sounds like a well deserved retirement. Firefighters definitely know how to do a send off the right way. It helps that they have all the cool trucks!

Congratulations. Hopefully, you have a lot of things to keep you busy, excluding the honey does that inevitably pop up. Retirement is the hardest assignment I've ever had.

What a send-off! Looks like you had a long and varied career, and an interesting and meaningful one to boot. From the sounds of it you earned the respect of your peers and made some good friends along the way. Job well done sir. Congratulations on a retirement that it sounds like you earned. Make it count and enjoy this new chapter!

740 hours of sick leave is a lot of love. Congratulations on retiring. Now, go live your life. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Congratulations on the career and best of luck in retirement. I like it. The last few days on the job as well as the Dinner, accolades, plaques, letters, etc. Were strange for me. I appreciated the good wishes ,but still felt strange getting the awards. Didn't get a watch either. Did get my badge, my Trooper hat with cap piece and my last duty P229.

Thank you for all those who needed you and you answered the call. “Our actions may be impeded... But there can be no impeding our intentions or our dispositions. Because we can accommodate and adapt. The mind adapts and converts to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting. The impeding to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” ― Marcus Aurelius

Congratulations on your retirement, Mikus! And thanks for your years of service. Now you get to do what you want to do on your terms. (W/in the limits of your finances, physical ability, and, if you're married, well... .) Sounds like you've earned it many times over. Enjoy it.
