I've been wanting to swim more but breathing hampers my sessions as I get tired. So, I thought I would try one of the swimming snorkels that center in the middle of your face.

I thought using it would be easy. But there must be trick - when I use it, I get water up my nose. Which is weird because when I just swim, no water goes up the nose.

What's the trick? Do I need to get nose plugs or something?

Any time I have used a snorkel my nose has been inside a mask. It would make sense that as you breath through your mouth it would be hard to keep water from coming into your nose. You may be onto something with the nose plug/ pincher idea.

As a scuba diver you will learn to breath thru your mouth it just take practice, example if we are in 50 feet of water get our mask knocked off and cant find it we still have to breath to the surface.

Any recommendations for brand / model that is suitable for use in the pool with the face centered snorkel I bought? Or am I going to have to buy a new snorkel too?

In my best guess the OP is talking about this:

Link to original video: https://youtu.be/n5oVNhcd0kk

Toward the end, it suggests nose clips if water up nose.

Also says inhale via mouth exhale via nose.

Yup - that's basically what I'm trying to use - regular swim goggles with a centered snorkel. Results in water in the nose. Yuck. Weird - I can't even hold my breath to avoid getting water in the nose.

I stopped using the snorkel until I can get nose clips - not sure if they will work well. Can I use those compressible foam ear plugs for shooting? I wonder if they absorb water. Maybe I can get some of those to try too.

Ok. In the video it talks about how great thr snorkle is for allowing one to maintain a neutral body position and focus on technique. Later it goes on to discuss the ability to add something to make breathing more difficult to simulate high altitude training.

As someone who swam at the high school competition level donkey years ago, I will offer up this;
1. At first, it is going to wear you out
2. Stick with it and you will increase time between breaths, distance swam, and speed
3. As I recall, it was about 2 weeks of suck then it became routine.

Perhaps the following to start off with:
If doing freestyle, breath every stroke for x laps. Rest. Do 1/2 laps breathing every other stroke. Rest. Loop as desired.

Use backstroke to "rest" regain breath.

Swim underwater attempting to increase distance. As I recall, at peak, I was able to go 100 meters (4 lengths) inder water. Longer pool likley would have resulted in a greater distance. Today, all these years later, 25 meters to start would be inpressive. Some of it is mind over body as the body is screaming for air, but you can usually push another few seconds. You can also simply hold your breath and time it. Understand that idle vs. underwater swimming will be a longer hold.

Don't fret, just keep pushing yourself slightly further each time. It will come.

Unless you intend to compete, I would personally scrap the snorkle, push yourself and set reasonable challenges.

Your appetite will skyrocket if you start swimming laps for hours. It will be possible to gain weight, so be mindful.

This is merely opinion based on things done in the mid to late 1980s. Enjoy. Smile

Pretty spot on. I can go underwater for about 25 yards only. I used to be able to easily do 50.

I was hoping to use the snorkel temporarily to more quickly swim longer. Right now, I’m only able to do about 100 yards before needing to rest a couple minutes. Sucks and embarrassing, especially if people are waiting to use the lane.

I want to quickly get to a point where I can swim for 30 minutes continuous (800-1000 yards?).

I’ll give the snorkel one last chance since I’ll have nose clips soon. After that, I’ll just do it like you say.

You might as well call these suicide masks. You are breathing half of the old air you exhauled back in, before you even get to fresh air.

I find breathing through a snorkel or scuba without something covering my nose to be very difficult. It can be done, but for me took a lot of practice sitting in the shallow end with a snorkel and no mask. Still not sure I could do it while swimming. I also hate nose clips (I would not use plugs) so if it were me, I'd just wear a mask instead of goggles.
