When I was a kid in Missouri, there were a lot of ant lions around our home. They'd borrow into the dirt, then toss loose dirt out, forming a conical crater, ~1" deep, with loose dirt on its surface. When an ant went over the edge of the crater, it had trouble getting out, because the loose dirt would slide down. And the ant lion would help that process by flinging more dirt out. When the poor ant was near the bottom, the ant lion would have it for dinner.
Well, I discovered that I could capture an ant lion by plunging an old teaspoon into the crater, and dumping all onto the sidewalk. Then I'd drop the ant lion into the crater of some other ant lion. The captured ant lion would try to burrow into it. How the dirt would fly then! For awhile – then all was quiet…
