The "unintended" consequences of stupid laws.

St. Louis County did something similar. They enacted a law that if a business repaved a parking lot it was required to put in so many EV charging stations per number of parking spaces.

So... guess what? Nobody paves the parking lots anymore.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
-- Justice Janice Rogers Brown

California:

"Somehow both a 1st world and a 3rd world problem"

that should replace "Eureka" as the state motto.

Similar: Fort Pickett, VA; a dozen ancient barracks laden with lead paint, leaky oil heaters and asbestos... Regulations made tearing them down economically impossible, so they just sit there; vacant rotting eye sores right in the middle of Garrison... 42,000 acres, your telling me there isn't a decent place the rubble could be buried in Frown

This is what happens when wacko ideology replaces common sense, rational thought, and logic.

CA has a lot of Government, positions, agencies and officials with all types of obscure titles.

Look at that high speed train boondoggle, 15 Billion spent, close to zero accomplished.

I’ll visit at times but would never so much as register a bicycle in CA.

Is that called "paving yourself into a corner?"

But that's about the only way idiots will come to their senses - having to choose between stupid choices of their own making.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I don’t think that’s completely true. I believe that they have collected (through eminent domain or threat thereof) much of if not all of the right of way for a segment of rail that will be close to useless if it is ever completed. In many cases this right of way bisects working farms, dividing them and making them more difficult to farm. So they have accomplished something, they have made things worse for California residents and businesses with (at least next to) nothing useful to show for it.

You really have to be fair to the GDCs and give them credit where credit is due. They are consistent, and they consistently make things worse for the people they govern.

California just spent 4.2 million on fake ivy to cover the graffiti so the dump looks nicer for the Winter Olympics.

Yes people tagged it within 8 hours. No you can’t make this stuff up.

Does it make me a reactionary that the thought occurs that if they just declared “open season no bag limit” on anyone applying graffiti the problem might just go away?

Asphalt is made from fossil fuels, so it's bad and they wouldn't want it anyway.

In my county it’s mostly rural. There are no sidewalks except in subdivisions built in last 20 years. All new commercial construction has to have a sidewalk. So new buildings going up have the most random sidewalks that lead nowhere. It’s very visually unappealing

I'm with slosig. Less than zero accomplished.
Someday that bridge to and from nowhere will still be there, no tracks on it, no tracks leading to or from it. Just a monument to Gavin's friends' greed.

Regarding the original post: I think the LA people are doing the right thing. San Diego has ruined its suburbs with bike lanes that are used 1/1000 as much as the car lanes.

AND the bicyclist pay $0.00 in taxes to establish the devoted bike lanes or maintain them and the signs.
