There's no shotgun section so, here goes.

I fired a combo of 00 buck and slug and have heavy fouling.

I read to spray Kroil, let it set overnight, and it'll just peel off.

You?

Try it and see . Use a bronze brush to scrub it after soaking overnight .

Hoppes 9. Saturate the barrel, let sit, if really fowled saturate again. Bronze brush, clean patch.
Dab a little #9 behind the ears before leaving the bench. Big Grin

A lot of the fouling in shotgun bores is actually melted plastic from the wads, not lead, and as such regular gun cleaning solvents aren't often very effective at getting it out. I've not tried Kroil, but IMO that's worth a try and I doubt it will hurt anything.

What I found works best is to scrub the bore with a tornado brush, changing direction inside the bore (something you wouldn't typically do with a traditional bristle brush) until I get all the crud out.

I bought an older 870 with a slog barrel at a gun show. The previous owner must have loved shooting slugs. Conventional methods of cleaning failed miserably.
Repeated applications of Kroil and an 8’ strand of copper “Chore Boy” pot and pan scrubber tied to a rope got the job done……… eventually. Felt like a silver miner for a bit. Must have been years of lead in there.
Good luck!

I pull the barrels out and soak the bores with WD-40, the only time I use this product on any firearm. Let it soak while I clean the rest of the gun. Then use a 12g brush and run it through the bore to expel the plastic fouling, then wrap paper towel patches around the brush and further clean out the WD-40 residue. Then run some more paper towel patches through with Ballistol sprayed into the bore.

Bronze brush will do nothing, as it's way too soft for both lead and plastic.
Only "tornado" brush on a shotgun cleaning rod (not turning) will do the job.
Soaking it doesn't do much either, unless you want to mess with Ed's Red (with added aceton for plastic).
I scrub the barrels almost dry, turning the tornado brush manually, clockwise, in both directions, so it doesn't turn itself loose.
I also use a modified plastic bottle on the muzzle end of the barrel(s) to prevent splattering dirt all over the place.
If the barrels have chokes, leave them in place for initial scrubbing, to protect the threads.

There are specific cleaning solvents for lead. I have used them with heavy fouling on rifles and pistols.

I have a coach gun and it gets leading from buckshot. I usually squirt some Kroil and let it run down making sure to rotate the barrels to get it completely wet, then I secure it in the vise for an overnight soak-level so it doesn’t drip on the floor . I have plugged the barrels with a cork stopper and in the morning it wipes out with a patch over a tornado brush.

If there’s heavy leading that this method doesn’t work I wrap copper chore boy over an old bruh and get at it that way. A fellow shooter told me of some kind d of lead baby wipe type product he uses but I haven’t found them online yet.

I've heard of that. Shooting Times, maybe? Back in the day.

Anyway, it also removes bluing. If it's the same product.

To all, thanks. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I'm currently awaiting delivery of the Kroil and a new bristle brush.

I'll try that, first, then progress to the more drastic measures. (Barrel in vise, tornado brush in cleaning rod in cordless drill, etc)

In the formula for Ed's Red bore cleaner ACETONE is added for shotgun barrel cleaning as it dissolves the plastic from the shell wads.
I would just add Acetone to your regular bore cleaner.

I've cleaned a few police trade ins that looked like old sewer pipes. Alternating Hoppies and brake cleaner. Brand new looking in the end.

The best thing for cleaning out the plastic from wads, is good old boiling hot water down barrel/s or if you have something big enough to put the barrel/s in, followed by a bore brush to push the "snake skins" out.

Place the barrel on end with muzzle on top. Plug the chamber with a rubber or cork stopper.
Pour your cleaning solvent down the barrel and when full place a plastic bag on top, let it soak over the weekend or a week, doesn't matter.
Dump the cleaning solution out of the barrel and scrub the bore clean.

+1 Hoppes #9 is my go-to.

I've never tried brake cleaner... but if it's bad enough sounds like it's worth a try.

That's why I said to scrub it dry or almost dry. Brake cleaner makes everything dry and free from oil, so the plastic and lead are flaking off instead of being smeared inside the barrel or the brush just gliding over not removing anything.

I got my Kroil yesterday and doused the barrel in it and let it soak for several hours.

Then, wire bristle brush. No avail.

Wrapped the barrel in a rag and secured it in a carpenter's vise. #9 and wire bristle brush very aggressively and long time. No Avail.

On to harsher stuff. Amazing. Tenacious. Are we sure this is lead? Pretty old buckshot but new slug.
