The new map could lead to the GOP gaining up to 5 seats

https://justthenews.com/nation..._campaign=newsletter

Texas Democrats are leaving the state and heading to Chicago to try to block the state House from voting Monday on a new congressional map.

Texas Democratic leaders are scheduled to hold a news conference with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker after their arrival in the state.

The new map could lead to Republicans gaining up to 5 additional U.S. House seats in the 2026 midterm elections.

The Associated Press reported that leaving the state as a way to stop the vote puts Democrats at risk of fines and other penalties.

DNC Chair Ken Martin released a statement on Sunday in support of Texas Democrats.

“For too long, Donald Trump and Republicans have tried to get away with rigging the system, breaking the rules, and scheming to hold onto power. It’s time to fight back. Republicans are going after people’s health care, jobs, and pocketbooks while wrecking the economy to protect or enrich a handful of elites — and then they think they can get away with it by rigging the maps to overrule the will of voters."

He said the DNC is "proud to support these legislators in standing up and showing real leadership" in the state.

"We will fight alongside them to stop this anti-democratic assault. And, after this fight is done, we’re coming full force for the Republicans’ House majority," he said.

So Democrats are going to break the rules and scheme to rig the system to their benefit?

I like that idea but issue warrants for their arrest anyway. Then they need to stand in front of a judge.

California would require a special election to make any districting changes.

They’ve already done it. Between redistricting, ranked choice voting, mail in ballots, etc, California ensured a demorat supermajority. Newscum can go F himself with his “outrage” over Texas’ plan. Demorats hate it when Republicans play the same game.

Well there’s only 9 republican reps in California as it is.

The state has been gerrymandered for decades.

Yes, out of 52 seats, and Democrats have 43, calling it blue is a severe understatement. And the CA Senate and Assembly, Dems have a 75% majority of each, beyond the supermajority threshold.

Be funny to see some Federal warrants issued for unlawful Interstate flight to avoid prosecution.

"We are at War" Gov Hochul

ALBANY, N.Y. (WRGB) — A redistricting showdown in Texas is now spilling into New York State and other states, with a group of Texas Democrats fleeing to Albany in an effort to block what they call a dangerous and partisan power grab.

More than 50 Texas Democratic lawmakers walked out of the legislative session in Austin this week, effectively denying a quorum needed to pass a controversial mid-decade congressional redistricting plan.

The proposed map, backed by President Donald Trump and Texas GOP leaders, could flip as many as five U.S. House seats in favor of Republicans, giving them an advantage in the 2026 midterm elections.

A handful of the protesting lawmakers were welcomed to New York’s Capitol by Governor Kathy Hochul (D) Monday, who is openly backing their stand, calling it a necessary act of political courage.

This is war. We are at war,” Hochul added during a press conference alongside the visiting lawmakers.

The proposed map has sparked national outrage among voting rights advocates and civil rights groups. Critics argue the new maps would disproportionately target Black and Latino communities while sidestepping long-held redistricting norms.

“Let me be clear—the districts that are targeted overwhelmingly are Black districts,” said Rep. Jolanda Jones (D-Houston).

Rep. Mihaela Plesa (D-Dallas) pointed to President Trump’s influence, warning that giving in, could set a dangerous precedent.

“Donald Trump called our governor and said, ‘I just need a small change just five congressional members.’ And our governor said, ‘Sure. Coming right up,’” said Plesa. “This doesn't stop with Texas. If Trump and Abbott succeed, yeah it will give them five seats, but then, where else do they go?”
“These brave public servants are taking a stand, a strong stand against a blatant power grab that's happening in their state as we speak,” said Governor Hochul. “And this will have implications, not just in Texas, but for our entire nation and its future.”

The lawmakers left Texas at personal and political risk. Each faces a $500 fine for each day they are absent. Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has also threatened to remove them from office.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has also raised the possibility of felony charges for abandoning their duties, although legal experts have debated the enforceability of such action.

“We’re not abandoning our jobs,” said Rep. Lulu Flores (D-Austin). “I represent a Democratic district, and our voices deserve to be heard.”

The Texas lawmakers say they would be leaving Albany by the end of the day, but declined to say where they are heading next.

Governor Hochul, meanwhile, says New York may need to adapt if other states are redrawing congressional maps mid-cycle.

She has floated the idea of amending New York’s Constitution to allow redistricting outside the standard 10-year cycle—but only if other states violate that norm first.
