I got an offer in the mail from Capital One for a Quicksilver. It says I was pre-selected for a special offer. Open a new cc with them, spend (using the cc) $xxx in x months and they will give $xxx as a bonus.
I have a couple of bank accounts that I opened on similar offers. No problems.
But when I look around on the net I see some scam claims about the new offer.

Has anybody else received the Cap one offer and used it?

I've had a Quicksilver CC with them for some time and just recently got their "Savor" CC with the same type of offer. Once I charged the amount required, I instantly received the bonus.

Mrs.BurtonRW and I both have Quicksilver cards and I also have a regular platinum card with CapOne.

I’ve never had any problems with them. In fact, I’ve had several positive experiences with their customer service folks.

Do you think the offer is not actually from Capital One at all, or do you think Capital One would screw you out of the bonus?

Through a chain of acquisitions, I have three Capital One cards, including a Quicksilver. They have never done me wrong.

Agreed - have had this card for several years now after realizing how much I was missing out on with the cash back deals. I'm not chasing offers all around the world and swapping out monthly, but the up front bonus plus the monthly amount piling up is very nice.

Their notifications by email or text are spot on as well and can be configured easily. They send emails if you leave a large tip that looks unusual. And like any card this one has been hacked a few times but in each instance they notify me long before I'd notice the unusual transaction and have had a new card in my hand in a week or less.

What's in your wallet? Wink

I did something like this years ago but with Chase. IIRC, they taxed the amount they gave me. LOL.

There have been numerous scams lately with credit card/banks offering XXX to open a new account.

Fraudulent accounts are being opened up with the sole purpose of receiving the XXX money for opening the new account. They are not using the account but simply taking the bonus money.

If the offer was on Capital Ones website it is legit.

I don't think Cap One will cheat me out of the bonus money.
I just see comments about trying to talk me into a different card, ect.
I do wonder if it is, possibly, a scam offer by crooks mailing out a fake letter will bogus web site for people to go give personal info for ID theft.
I would visit a branch office but none in my area.

Go to Capital One's website and get a phone number from it and call them or use the chat if it's there.

I've had a Capital One Credit card for years and have always been impressed with their Customer Service.

And yes, the money they give you is income, so it's taxable.

Just be careful opening and closing CC accounts. This activity will adversely affect your credit score if that's important to you.

These types of offers are often used by card issuers. There's no reason to doubt their ability to track and correctly credit your account.

RE: is it genuine? If you got it in your physical mail, and the quality of the piece looks professional, and it directs you to a website owned by Capital One, then it's most likely legit. But if you're skeptical, no reason not to call them to confirm. If you do, since you are skeptical of the piece, be sure to use contact info from the Capital One website rather than anything printed on the suspect piece of mail itself.

Go directly to Capital One's website. (NOT the link in the offer.) Find the customer service phone number from that. Call them and ask if the offer is legit.

Capital One has been ok with promotions, but not the best. If you're actually looking to get a new card, check out the promotions from all the different companies here:

I've had Capital One for a while. They switched me to Quick Silver. One of the promotions offered 0% interest for 12 months. I'm piling up balances on it and just paying the minimum payment.

I'll pay it off when the just before the 0% goes away. And I know since the balance will continue to increase, it will hit my credit score. But I like how it minimizes my cash flow since I don't have any income coming in at all.

The takeaway is to make sure you read all the fine print and keep track of any thresholds or time deadlines.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

My wife received the same offer, and figured she would go for it. She has another Cap One card, they told her she was approved. They sent her the card, but when she went to activate it by computer, it would not activate. They asked her to FAX them a copy of her driver's license as proof of identity, she sent it twice but they said they couldn't read it. Eventually she gave up.

They may have noticed that my wife has not paid a dime of credit card interest in over a decade.

Or they may have had a corporate brain fart.
