They won't let you change providers when you're financing the phone.
The phone may or may not be unlocked allowing you to change providers, even after it's paid for.
If you buy the latest and greatest you'll pay much more than last years model.
Staying with AT&T compared to a number of the lower cost options (who give you the same service network) will cost a third to half more for your service.
Add all those up and you can see what the difference is each year.

It's only money.

I just renewed my ATT Prepaid (switch from postpaid last year. It's $300 up front. Only fees/tax are seen one time. Maybe not family-plan friendly but maybe things have changed.
