Three oil facilities in separate locations across Mexico and the United States have suffered huge fires after sudden explosions, according to reports.

The explosions all occurred in the space of 24 hours.

All three facilities, including one in Texas, are controlled by the state-owned Mexican oil company, Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX).

On Thursday, three separate fires broke out at PEMEX facilities, resulting in the deaths of two workers, Bloomberg reported.

At least eight people were also injured and several others are missing.

The explosions have resulted in increased scrutiny of the safety record of the Mexican state oil firm in advance of its earnings call on Monday.

The fires broke out at the PEMEX crude oil storage facility in Veracruz, Mexico, at the Combined Maya plant of the Minatitlán Refinery in Veracruz, and in Deer Creek, Texas.

One of the Veracruz locations hit by an explosion is Mexico’s largest oil storage facility.

On Friday morning, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexico’s president, said at a press conference that the fire at the Minatitlan refinery was immediately brought under control.

However, he noted that the fire at the Ixhuatlan storage facility has not yet been extinguished.

He said, “in the case of Ixhuatlan, it will take more time because it occurred at an oil deposit.”

Kanueter valves? Hmmm... I was thinking it more like the Fetzer valves and 30 weight ball bearings. I have been wrong in the past though.

Deer Creek, Texas.
Dipshit reporter can't even get the basics right. It's Deer Park, TX, which is a Houston suburb southeast of downtown. Interestingly enough, Deer Park also made the news this week as another plant (i.e. not PEMEX) is receiving 2 million gallons of Ohio derailment's toxic runoff. This portion of Houston is wall to wall refineries and chem plants.

Back to the PEMEX story, fire broke out in CDU-1 which is about 22% of its 312 kbd refinery.

Pemex Deer Park, Texas, small crude unit shut after fire
By Erwin Seba

Feb 24 (Reuters) - The small crude distillation unit (CDU) at Pemex's (PEMX.UL) 312,500 barrel-per-day (bpd) Deer Park, Texas, refinery was shut following a Thursday night fire, said people familiar with plant operations on Friday.

A fire broke out on the 70,000-bpd CDU-1 on Thursday night, the sources said. The 270,000-bpd CDU-2 remains in operation at the refinery.

A Pemex spokesperson did not reply to a request for comment about operations at the Deer Park refinery.
Another report says all clear issued by 6:30 AM on Friday (i.e the next morning).

The crude distillation unit (CDU) is the front-end portion of the refinery where they're heating crude oil until it turns into a vapor and sending it into a distillation column. Gas continues out the top, light ends liquids fall out on the upper trays, and heavy end liquids fall out on the bottom trays.
