I found USA issue infantry combat boots quite satisfactory for many days of volunteering with the police. I was surprised that they have lasted for 20 years, however they were not worn daily. My volunteer work is intermittent, so not a lot of hours in those 20 years. But, they remain waterproof, supportive, and still take a shine. The sole lugs did finally reduce to inconsequential. I found 5.11 boots on sale, and enjoy wearing them now. ------- Trying to simplify my life...

Wore these for years- great boots. I just replaced mine with custom fit 10” Whites Boots. WELL worth the money. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. Being the grey man has a point. A simple design with welt and toe cap, with a plain sole line, not Black Sabbath demon teeth, would likely blend in - just don't blouse them. Most won't anyway. I see those aggressive side molded teeth as a tell to how "tactical" a boot would be. It goes to the environment any of us would specialize in - where you live. Aggressive traction and "fence climber" toes would look normal in a semi rural area, in a paved metro they be stylin'. The features would be out of place. Goes to features and the top two are insulation and Goretex. If you need the one you might need the other, but summer makes them highly intolerable. If it's April to October at my latitude, no insulation works and getting your feet wet is a matter of choice in most cases. It would certainly not endanger them with frostbite even if soaked. Another problem is wading thru tall grass - I have a field behind my house - and once it's up higher than the top of the boot, the morning dew will pour in. Military knows this. It completely bypasses any value to Goretex. Same if you stumble into a hole filled with slush from snow runoff. Goretex can't work past the open holes we are forced to have in clothing, either. You have to vent it, too, under heavy work loads. If it can't escape from the interior then you stay wet. One field report from the Brits in DS1 related to that, some were getting trenchfoot in Iraq from it. A more breathable boot didn't cause it. Our favorite boot for how we live comfortably in a 40 hour work week and a few summer hikes might not hold up like we think after 6 months of daily wear. One reason why the Army issues 2 - two - pair in Basic. How many have two pairs of their daily wear boots and alternate them? A lot of trades who get the company to buy the first pair report that those boots broke down quickly, but after the second pair got into the rotation the second ones took a lot longer to reach the same condition. Not drying them out and wearing them day after day causes most of the foot and boot problems in life.

I have an older pair of Jungle Boots, a pair of .3/4 length SWAT's , and an ancient pair of Red Wing Irish Settlers, the rest are casual stuff that would not be best, even tho the Red Wings are insulated, and may be to hot for August in VA, they would probably be my first pic, https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/

These or my Acadias, that is if I could not replace my boots every 18 mos or so. If I could replace them when they wore out then the choice would be harder. Possibly my Lowa R-8s GTX patrol or the Zephyr GTX Hi TF (better toe protection) or Salomon GTX hiking boots, I had a pair of their Quest GTX boots and they were great ...very light and comfy.

I'd avoid anything with EVA because it will break down. You will probably still need multiple pairs of whatever you buy.

But what brand man, what BRAND? And I wear underwear for pjs so I can't accept a recommendation for basically Underoos and shower shoes seriously. How many pockets on the undies do those guys sport? ___________________________________________ Life Member NRA & Washington Arms Collectors Mistake not my current state of joshing gentle peevishness for the awesome and terrible majesty of the towering seas of ire that are themselves the milquetoast shallows fringing my vast oceans of wrath. The Lowa's seem great. How waterproof are they in reality? I'm in the west of the PNW so that's pretty important. Warm is fine, but something with layers I can adjust with socks. Waterproof though . . . ___________________________________________ Life Member NRA & Washington Arms Collectors Mistake not my current state of joshing gentle peevishness for the awesome and terrible majesty of the towering seas of ire that are themselves the milquetoast shallows fringing my vast oceans of wrath. How waterproof are they? I know that you live near me so we would travel more or less the same terrain. ___________________________________________ Life Member NRA & Washington Arms Collectors Mistake not my current state of joshing gentle peevishness for the awesome and terrible majesty of the towering seas of ire that are themselves the milquetoast shallows fringing my vast oceans of wrath. [QUOTE]Originally posted by AKSuperDually: I've got a pair of these: Zamberlan Vioz GTX I've had some unexpected multi-day hikes in them, and am quite pleased with the performance. They live in my get-home bag now, but I routinely wear them on site visits at work. I have danners, and matterhorns, bogs, and lacrosse boots...but when I think I'm going to need strong, sturdy, warm & reliable boots I grab my zamberlans.[/QUOTE I’m a fan now. Wondered if I would ever get them broken in. They have become the best boot I’ve ever owned. I’ll admit they aren’t suited to urban terrain like tile floors, slick as a gut. ----------The weather is here I wish you were beautiful----------

Lowa's Task Force boots are also issue boots for the British, German and a handful of other Northern European militaries...regions that are comparable if not more wet than the US Pac NW during the colder months. Scotland itself is a whole level of misery. The British army's dark brown boots in MultiCam is pretty tight. Remember, when it comes to top-tier footwear, waterproof, means there's an ACTUAL barrier inside the boot, preventing moisture from getting in. The flip-side is, a leather boot WILL wet-out, meaning the outer material will become waterlogged and you will get the sensation of moisture seeping in and the sense of carrying a bit more weight because of the water absorption. Gotta take care of the outer material.

I have had several pairs of Merrell M2's and Danner's over the years but my work boots are Rocky S2Vs. I was impressed by these after trying them on a whim and was shocked how comfortable they are. They arent water tight or Goretex or anything fancy but they just work. I have them for 7 years now and have done little to them other than occassionally dry brush them and run my boot dryers inside. For everyday use I love them but if the need arises to do any serious hiking or backbacking I would probably go back to Merrell or Danner.
