Am I reading this correctly?

https://www.thedailybeast.com/...-joining-space-force

"....Her family—Fram is married to wife Peg; as well as Kathryn, they have a younger daughter, Alivya, 8—has just moved to a new home in the D.C. area, and Fram is speaking from her office, a trans flag and American flag in the background. There is a picture of two space shuttles on landing pads, shrouded in fog. There are also pictures of both her grandfathers, who served in World War II..."

I really don't care who you marry but there are laws...

Seems like a perfectly normal family to raise kids in. Yes you read it wrong Kathryn is their daughter.

I do find this interesting, "It was Trump’s incendiary tweets, announcing the ban on trans people from serving, that led Fram to fully transition two years ago, aged 40." I'm surprised that a Trump tweet was that made him decide he wanted to be a she.

It’s awkwardly written but they’re referring to a second daughter.

I don’t know how I’d handle my wife coming to me and telling me she wants to become Lennie instead of Lindsay…

Just to be clear, that simply is not possible. No matter how many bits are lobbed off, this dude is still a dude. And if you're so screwed up between the ears that you have no clue what you are, you have no business being anywhere near children.

Journalism schools place the bulk of there emphasis on churning out leftists and don't bother teaching them how to write succinctly anymore.

No, as pointed out above by PASig above, you misunderstood the poorly constructed sentence quoted in the OP.

Earlier in the article, (the second sentence) the relationship is noted:
quote:
Her elder daughter Kathryn, 12, ...

I clicked on the link because of your comment. Wow. The face and how far she is from them says she still has some sense.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

It's a bit awkward, but not necessarily grammatically incorrect. Note the semicolon.

If the phrase had read:

"Fram is married to wife Peg as well as Kathryn"

or even used a comma like:

"Fram is married to wife Peg, as well as Kathryn"

That would grammatically indicate that Fram is married to both Peg and Kathryn.

However, a semicolon divides two independent statements, much like a period. In this case, it indicates:

A) Fram is married to wife Peg.

and

B) As well as Kathryn, they have a younger daughter, Alivya.

Semicolons are used in place of a period between two independent clauses (especially brief ones) that are closely related to the same thought or topic, rather than dividing them into two separate sentences with a period. In this case, both clauses are closely related because they're both explaining the family composition.

In addition, there's a second reason that a semicolon is the correct means to separate the two clauses here, since one wouldn't want the hard stop of a period in the midst of an interruption intended to insert brief supplemental information inside another complete sentence. In this situation here, the author is making a statement in a complete sentence:

Her family has just moved to a new home in the D.C. area, and Fram is speaking from her office, a trans flag and American flag in the background.

And using dashes to signal an interruption beginning after "Her family", in order to insert additional information about the family makeup, before continuing with the complete sentence about the family's move and her current location.

Therefore, while the author ended up creating an overly complicated and awkwardly long sentence structure that made the resulting statement a bit harder to understand for some modern readers, it's grammatically correct as it stands.

Thus concludes Professor RogueJSK's gratuitous grammar lesson. Don't forget to review your notes for the quiz next week.

How does this even work for the wife when the husband comes home one day and announces that “he” intends to turn into a “she”. Doesn’t that technically make the wife a lesbian? What if she doesn’t want to be married to another “woman”?

I wonder if they know what they are getting into when they marry.

Once his daughters had graduated from high school, a friend of mine announced that he was gay. His wife promptly divorced him.
