I'm sure at some point, we'll be dealing with genetically engineered athletes nurtured in a petri dish.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

There’s actually a test for genetic manipulation, as well as a test to discrimate gender (much easier as it’s actually a chromosome Barr body they look for).

Probably their attempt to attempt to punish the country but not individual athletes who did not take part. I know a couple of archers that were on the 1980 Olympic team when we boycotted the Olympics. They're still bitter over it. It sucks to put that much time and effort into something to have it ruined by politics.

Can a transgendered female compete as a female?
Or do chromosomes count?

This isn't just politics or a few individuals cheating and tarnishing everyone else.
The whole organization was involved in cheating and they were even corrupting the labs that were supposed to monitor the athletes. This was exposed when an insider decided to go public and had lots of documents to show what they did.
Russia and others cheating isn't anything new. They have always been cheating and everyone knew it. What's new is that now they have the proof and couldn't overlook it.
The organizers didn't want something like this, there's too much money involved in the Olympics industry. They just couldn't sweep this one under the rug.

This should be a strong message to all the other countries about the consequences of breaking the rules.

If the allegations are true the corruption reached all the way up. Stuff like that isn't limited to one endeavor - any other sports organizations allowing those fine individuals to compete, let alone host events, ought to redouble their scrutiny.
