If you buy a new chime you could probably just buy a chime that works with the system.
One that works on lower voltage would be electronic circuit board with speaker, The coil operated mechanical chimes all would likely be 24v.Your current chime will work with enough juice if it worked prior and there is probably a 24v transformer already there that got bypassed or not putting out enough current to operate everything that is running on it.

The transformer is 16 volt. I looked for an electronic chime that is wired to 16 volt and could not find one.

10VA is standard door chime. 30VA is used for long distance runs or for powering door chime cameras due to voltage loss in the first case and higher power requirements in the later. They will typically come in multitap configuration. 16v for standard chimes, 8v/24v for some kinds of commercial bells/buzzers. Depending on the requirements of your chime you will used the 16 or 24v taps, the most important part is VA rating, get 30 for most uses. Get 40VA/24v if the unit can operate at that voltage AND it's a really long run.

The above information is general information, obviously call chime company tech support for additional requirements.

All I know is our security director told me it would fix the no sound problem and it did.

My transformer is only 10 VA (I will confirm today in the attic). I will try the 30 va transformer. It is a fairly long run.

Problem solved with the 30 VA transformer. I’m assuming this is the same issue people can have with long led strips fading at full brightness at the longest part. Correct voltage but not enough amps Thanks guys for the help!
