I couldn't find the recent thread on all the folks taking a header while taking a selfie. However in the sub-articles to the story about the girl who fell off the 101 this weekend (who knows how many this makes) saw this dribble as a linked story:

Selfie deaths: don't blame victims

Well that I have to read. Imagine my surprise when it revealed that this isn't just a meanie pants issue, but it's sexist too!

quote:
And we know that women experience sexualized harassment online with stunning regularity, and that women are judged negatively for sharing images of themselves. Perhaps it's not surprising that, perusing the coverage of "selfie deaths," it does seem to be primarily women who are mocked if something goes wrong in the perfectly normal pursuit of that documentation.

Maybe it was wrong of me to send the author a note and observe that it wasn't really just primarily women, but apparently blonde women???

And, perhaps, she should read the article hot-linked in the same stream of stupidity and this stat:

quote:
They found that the most selfie deaths occurred in India, followed by Russia, the US and Pakistan. Most of the victims were men (about 72%) and under the age of 30.

More than 250 morons die, most of them men, some of them women, some undeclared!

Sorry, but I see nothing "normal" about the insatiable fervor devoted to taking "Selfies"--it's narcissistic at best, and fanatic at worst.

Mind you, I am not above having an occasional photo made including me with some notable object in the background (I average fewer than one a day, and have to have someone else operate the camera, a DSLR). The horde of people waving selfie sticks at every attractiion, to me, is idiotic and very distracting. I consider that the fact I have a photo of the place is sufficient proof that I was there--I don't need a picture with it to prove that. (Hmmm, if I looked like Cary Grant I might feel differently. . . .)

I'm confused, men aren't allowed to care how women look, women are compelled to care how they look?

I would ask if you’re over the age of 14 and are just now figuring that out, but I must admit that it took me a very long time to discover that fact for myself. Despite what the accepted narrative is, many, many women care far more about how they appear to other women than they care what men think of their appearance. What started my recognition of that fact was hearing a woman government employee recount how she was told to dress up more and start wearing makeup by her supervisor—a woman.

This whole selfie thing is and has been just plain stupid and now turns deadly because people are just so self absorbed. Wake up people and pay attention. Almost the same as texting and driving.

I find it crazy how much people are in to looking at their phones as opposed to being aware of their surroundings. I can check my phone when I get to the safety of where I am going; in the meantime I am watching my surroundings.

I have observed this to my wife. She is a fitness instructor and I had been going online to places like Facebook and Instagram to get some basic interesting body weight workouts that I could do on the road. Simple right? Well, it turns out that most fitness pages are literally hundreds of selfies of the fitness trainer, usually women, posing after a workout. Before a workout. After. While cooking. While yogaing. Literally these women are posting hundreds and hundreds of pictures of themselves. I literally told my wife that some of these ladies had more pictures of themselves in a month than I had in a decade. It is a mental fucking illness.

Nope Cool Just my way of pointing out the disconnect between too many people's image and reality.

Yup! In any given week of travel on R234 here in Manassas, I see literally dozens of them staring into their damned cell phones! Many of them weaving across both lanes, while traveling well above the 55 MPH limit. They seem to believe that those "55" speed limit signs are posted as minimums.

As long as they only kill/injure themselves, I do not care a bit what they do.

IMO, it helps clean out the gene pool.

This is an absolute truth, and I believe it is genetically embedded.
