Can some1 provide some schooling and critera?

I am in pain. My back HURTS a lot, don't want to use my arms.

Wife and I have been discussing the subject for a while now and also rushing into a new dissapointment if we can hold until we find the right pick.

Currently we have a Sealy Posturepedic Specialty, Holiday, firm mattress. It's 5~6 YO and slowly killing us.

In Argentina, an average quality mattress costs now $1500. Payed around $500 originally
They're extremely expensive for us and the current one should be good for a few years more but it is not ageing gracefully.

I weight 165 pounds. My wife much less.

I'd see a specialist first. When I started sleeping with my legs raised at the knees, it reduced pressure on my lower back greatly. Also, one leg is shorter, throwing off my hip (lower back) for YEARS. Right now I watch both issues and get in a bit of regular swimming.

My mattress is eight years old, an extra-firm with a pillow top. A "Beautyrest" created for Macy's. They suckered me into the warranty but I didn't need it. Seems to be holding up fine but it does have points which seem brand-new-feeling. So I move around a bit.

I'll start by stating that I have no idea how mattress buying works in Argentina.

In the US, there are 3 schools of thought:
  • Go to several mattress stores and lay on several mattresses for 10 minutes each. If you start off on a sleep number, you can adjust what each person likes (might not be your current firm) and narrow down your criteria faster.
  • If both people are less than 200 lbs, ordering a well-reviewed memory foam or latex mattress off the Internet. The quality of the layers becomes extremely important if 1 or both people are over 200 lbs (On-line reviews will be incredibly unreliable if this is the case) and will take a lot of research on the layers. Here in the US, mattress underground is the best resource for researching quality of layers.
  • Do 1 and then do 2.

Another way to save money is to buy a memory foam or latex mattress topper for your existing firm mattress. As long as it's not sagging and the firmness of mattress is what is killing you. I had to sleep on my guest bedroom mattress for 2 months which was way too firm for me and a less than $100 latex topper completely transformed my sleep and how I felt the next day.

Today most mattresses are foam type, multi layer, cool foam on top, and are shipped in a box, after being shrink wrapped.

Not sure if they can ship to Argentina but the hot companies are below: YOu'd have to contact them for shipping information, if you have similar in Argentina that would be the place to look. We have one from Costco and it's been great, the foam allows the bed to cradle your body vs the old tech mattress design.

The orthopedic surgeon that operated on my mother a few years ago told her to always get the firmest mattress you can get, regardless of one’s age and forego one with a pillow top.

Mattresses are one of those things in life you don’t go cheap on.

I had a Sleep Number mattress for a long time, and over time it wore out. Toward the end of its life I was waking up every morning with a bad backache. I finally got rid of it and switched to a semi-used conventional mattress / box spring that I was essentially given. It's pretty firm, although I don't have any information about what it's rated at in terms of firmness. After two nights I was ready to take it out to the driveway and burn it. My back hurt worse than the old mattress. Rather than spend weeks searching for the perfect mattress, I went out and spent $300 on a 3" thick Therepedic brand gel-foam mattress topper. THAT made a world of difference. I haven't slept this good in years. It's been well worth the price. I'm in the 225-235 lb range.

What timing. I was just about to post a very similar question, so if you do not mind, I'll just add it right in here.

    QUESTION:
How long should a typical name brand mattress last? (excluding comments about ones sexual activities)

Our mattress is older - 12 years old maybe. We noticed quite the indentation where we sleep. We think we sleep ok but wondering if we could sleep better. Sometimes it is hard to know if aches and pains are from getting older or from something like needing a new mattress and not realizing it.

As to recommendations for the OP, personally, we hated the Select Comfort options that our latest bed replaced. It was like the Grand Canyon in the middle. Latex and Tempurpedic mattresses were just too hot. We like it cooler. We have been using a Simmons firm Beautyrest. We selected it after testing many varieties in stores.

    Nicky,

Is the Valencia, Spain–based bedding manufacturer Garme Colchones also known as Joya Sleep Systems available in Argentina? They make great foam mattresses equal to the best brand names sold in the US but are not in the US market. Less expensive too.

We got two queen sized when they were available through the military exchange system. Great support and not hot. Guests have raved about them when staying in the guest bedroom so equipped.

If so, well worth your time to check out.

I also have back problems and needed a firm mattress. This Link may help you choose or avoid certain brands. A latex mattress on an adjustable base with vibration feature was exactly what I needed.
I ordered it sight unseen and we two senior citizens put the base and three mattress system together and the level of firmness was just right without moving one of the firmer layers to the top position. Good luck.

Only two mattresses in past 30 years: first a king waterbed with no baffles for 15 years- loved it, and second current bed is king high dollar (> 3K) coil spring medium hard that is not made anymore. Cannot flip the mattress but did rotate it 180 degrees years ago to extend life. Looking for new mattress now - a daunting task. My mattress is so nice that I hate to travel and use other beds but it has major depressions it in now.

A few years ago we purchased a Temperpedic mattress for about $3000. We really like it.

Since then we have purchased several Chinese made foam mattresses from both Sams Club and Costco and have been very happy with the results. We have paid between 3 and $500 for a queen size and our other family members have raved about them.

As others have said get a firmer one.

AFAIK, I don't have back issues (yet).
Last night sleep is having me in tears today and my wife is also sleeping uncomfortably.
    Our mattress is to blame.

Wonder if any of you has experience with these new (to us) mattresses that come rolled or if these are the same that you call "in a box". I believe they're just foam, no springs.

Argentinian made mattresses are alledgedly on par with imported ones, local reviews and articles say, so i'm looking for your advise on what type mattress to avoid or what type is better.
Now and then we escape our own place and spend a few nights at a nice hotel not far from our home. Usually we sleep better in those places.

After the current mattress, a middle priced one, i'm reluctant to double or triple the bet if the rhing is going to last only 5 years or less.

I am sorry for your difficulties and I have no ideas about Argentina, except I hope to visit someday. My wife and I had an expensive conventional mattress only five-years-old that gave us aces and pains. Last week we bought a foam mattress at Costco for only $500 and all was cured.

I spent so much on mattresses over the decades it hurts to think about. Tempurpedic, sleep number you name I tried it. Water beds. foam, traditional coil over, nothing worked for me.

Everything was too soft or sagged and got soft within a year.

I finally solved my problem. About three years ago I put a piece of plywood and a thick(er) foam mattress topper on top of my Tempurpedic mattress. For $150.00 I solved my problems. Yes, it is a bit firm but I like it that way. Now my back never hurts and I am not buying expensive mattresses more often than I want

    Nicky,

The Garme mattresses we have came vacuum packed requiring they been unfolded and allowed to expand to their functional size. Took a few hours.

Most foam style mattresses are packed and shipped like this. No problems! Smile

You said you stayed in a hotel and the bed was better. Did you look at the mattress tag? Perhaps that would be a start. I know in the States that they offer mattresses with the upscale hotel moniker on them. I do not know if they are better. I am in the market for a new mattress so I will be following this thread. The general advice is to not go cheap on mattresses or shoes.

We did check what the hotel mattress was and went to the manufacturer's store.
They thing was, after a bunch of BS discounts, around 1.5k.

Usually they all offer between 40~60% discount, an extra 10~20% if you pay cash.

    Absurd.

What is the real price once the smoke clears?
Never heard of such huge "discounts" in any other line of business.

Yes, my mom n dad have had a sleep number for years until it wore out. Then mom got an all latex mattress, she says they both sleep better . My dad has always been a person who needs a hard hard mattress- who literally put a half sheet of 3/4 inch plywood on his Hal of the bed to stiffen it up. Since mom got the latex mattress, they both sleep well.

So much so, that mom had a latex mattress delivered to my old house in NC...one day the bell rang and ups dude was dropping off a mattress wrapped into a burrito...I wrestled it into the room and cut the plastic wrap and surprisingly it is comfortably.

Mrs. Mike and I have a ten year old tempurpedic mattress on our bed, once or twice a year I rotate it so we don’t get divots in it. And we are happy with it, but it was an adjustment to get used to it...it was hotter than the old style springs and coiled mattress we had before.

We are gonna be due for a new mattress in a few years and we are looking at the purple mattress...
