TMatsPeople Killed by Drivers Running Red Lights...
Hits a 10 year high, according to a study by the AAA. If you’ve driven in the city lately, you’ve probably suspected that drivers running red lights is worse than it used to be. Well, apparently it is.
quote:
In 2017, the latest figures available, 939 people were killed by vehicles blowing through red lights, according to a AAA study of government crash data.
It's the highest death toll since 2008 and 28% higher than in 2012. AAA says two people are killed every day in the U.S. by drivers who don't stop for the signals.
I sure wait a second and look again before I venture away on a green light. You also have to take care approaching an intersection on a stale green light. If it turns orange before I reach the intersection, I’ll generally stop, but man if someone is behind you...

WaterburyBobYup. I never pull out from a red light before looking both ways first.
I've seen too many idiots run lights. A couple years ago someone got killed pulling out of the road my workplace is on when the light changed. The car that ran the light must have been doing at least 60 on a non-highway road.

Timdogg6About 2 weeks ago a woman was hit by someone who ran a light, a driver stopped to assist. As I passed the lady on the road she as run over by another driver who was being impatient with the car stopped in front of her (he was assisting). I saw that from about 8 feet away.
Got out, and helped as much as I could, as best I know she is still in ICU. Fucking people need to cool it.
And to top it off, both driver fled after finding out she wasn't dead from me. Cops still haven't caught them.

There are more people driving more miles since the Great Recession, but that doesn't explain why red-light deaths are increasing at a faster rate, said Brian Tefft, senior researcher for the AAA Foundation. He said he suspects distracted driving played a role, as did traffic lights that weren't timed optimally, perhaps with a yellow caution cycle that's too short.
"suspects"?? The Hell you say. Only every driver in the world knows this.

41Some yellows are not timed long enough considering the speed and vehicle. Should a tractor trailer lock up the brakes and stop in the middle of the intersection?
Route 50 and Centreville Road is one example. I have seen tractor trailers drive through on a red light.

spike86Around me its people running the left turn signal. I routinely see 2 and 3 cars going through after the arrow turns red.

BigSwedeI haven't seen the police writing red light tickets in years around here

YooperSigsLast October my Silverado was hit in an intersection by a chick in an old Monte Carlo. She told the cops her brakes failed. I think she was using her phone but no proof. 13K worth of damage.
Had I been in my tiny Trax or on my BMW, I would be posting this using the Wi-Fi in Hell.
I too now wait a couple a seconds now before I cross.

Good on you for stopping. People nowadays have no respect or patience for others, as a people we are losing the veneer of civility and respect for others in this narcissistic, all about me world. I have luckily not seen a red light accident but boy have I seen numerous red light runners - especially at two intersections locally where it seems very prevalent - one of which is an intersection at an interstate which recently had one near miss as I was sitting at it which was sooooooo close to being a hit it couldn't have been timed any better, someone was looking out for those folks as a brodozer truck blasted through a solid red light and barely missed the van.
For a camera - I moved away from the single front view ROAV's just last week and decided to up my game with front and rear like this
Rexing . So far it has worked like a champ and getting a rear camera view directly out the back is very nice as one stretch of road I drive to work has tons of tailgaters and those that run right up on you and try to get past on a two lane when they shouldn't(its a busy road both ways). Seen lots of accidents on that road including a fatal head on a while back

Yeah right...

Red light cameras have about as much to do public safety as gun control laws.

Gear.UpIt certainly seems like there are a lot of people running reds. Guess they ain't got time for that.
This dashcam video of mine has a t-bone accident from a red light runner.

RNshooterI always stop for yellow lights and keep an eye on my rear view mirror. Many a times, I have been at a complete stop, looking at a red light, and a second later a car blows by me, at redline.
Gives me the damned willies, those close calls.

TommydoggI'm starting to see a lot of people jump a green light as it turns green and turn in front of you when you are going straight. I mounted front and rear cameras in my Jeep last weekend. I'm going to follow with the rest of my vehicles.

Scuba Steve SigMost people around here are too busy fiddling with their phone to go when the light turns green.

Blume9mmTwice my dog has saved me from death or at the very least being severely injured.... just up from my house is a red light and I'm there waiting for it to turn Green and get distracted by the dog just as it does and spend a second or two telling the dog to stop scratching or what ever and then start out in the intersection and a car just misses me going at least 50 mph......the second time it happened is when I finally got what other above have mentioned: if you are the first in line at a red light when it turns green you look carefully both ways before moving....

Here as well. But it's typically at a light at a busy intersection. Left turn lane backs way up but the light only goes green for long enough for about 3 cars to get through. Even worse when you have to wait for the first in line to drag out the last booger and then put the phone down.

Pipe SmokerI walk 4-5 miles most days. I see lots of people walk across an intersection while gazing at their phone. Yeah, the Walk sign is on, but… Me? My head is swiveling.

P220 SmudgeI’m just gonna go ahead and say it’s cell phones. I got rear-ended while stopped at a stoplight three weeks ago tomorrow. Put your damn phone away when you’re driving - it’s that simple.
