Do you dethatch it in the fall?

Keep in mind thatch is roots that come to the surface, generally from excessive watering, then die. It's not grass clippings.

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Three laps around the house, throwing grass away from it. Then back and forth as best I can. All the time dodging propane tanks, equipment, wet spots, and the like.

Stripes looks like you care. Laps offer nothing in terms of time saving especially if you discharge into the middle.

A customer sent me a picture of his lawn. He inadvertently got the neighbor’s lawn (to the right) in the photo. I fertilize both with the same product and rate at the same time. The neighbor to the right hired me because she wants her lawn to look like his. But she bags her clippings. She basically undoes everything I do and she won’t change.
Not to argue, but varietal differences in bluegrass can easily explain the color. Our sod nursery changed cultivars and we quickly found out that was a problem if you had to resod an old job. The new was dramatically improved in about every way to include color.

I’d let that sleeping dog lie, rather than spend any effort to mulch.

How come we don't have programmable self mowers that remember the route taken and repeat it?

Stripes with side discharge. Bagging would take me all day. With a ZTR, laps just don’t make sense in my head. I’ve been doing it long enough that I have it down to a science. My yard can’t be seen from the road so it’s just routine at this point. I take better care with my MiL’s yard next door. She likes it and she’s up by the road.

We do. I have a part time job where they have them. They are programmed to go out into their assigned area and cut until their computer tells them that their batteries are getting low. Then they return to their charging stations, recharge themselves and when fully charged, resume cutting grass. It's pretty cool to see them in action. They do not look like traditional mowers but instead resemble little green turtles or aliens. IIRC they are made by Husqvarna and are not cheap.

That's interesting. The part of my lawn that I think needs de-thatching I never water.

In this case it comes down to cultural practices.

There are a few 'Roomba' style mowers out there. No idea on how well they work.

In my case, I don't know that I'd trust it to not fall in the pool. Big Grin

Riding mower and stripes. My yard is not set up for laps. I bag the grass because the mornings the dew soaked clippings will stick to the dogs paws and end up in the house.

Have you considered the combination unit? Lawn mower / pool cleaner? I hear good things about them.

They have a 'Roomba' option of both of those. Why not a combo. Shark Tank here I come.

I had the same concerns [aside from the $$$ cost] on the 'Roomba' pool cleaners. We have a sloped beach entry in our pool & I'd worried about it climbing out & cleaning the yard.

This is what I do too.

I do it just because going the same direction gets boring. But, for some reason my wife likes to see the different pattern and always comments on it.

Simple pleasures. Smile
