The girlfriends nephew is getting into camping/survival/military stuff. Among other x mas presents I wanted to get him a book to teach different knots. Any suggestions? Strive to live your life so when you wake up in the morning and your feet hit the floor, the devil says "Oh crap, he's up."

I've got the Ashley's Book of Knots ...it's three inches thick and explains all kinda stuff about the differeing line's, knots, contruction, strength etc... got it when I was a sailor from someone who loves me.... and he will need a good marlinspike knife too "Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor.” Robert A. . While I don't have a specific book in mind to suggest, I prefer those that are illustrated over photos. The illustrated can show both the rope and using a different color line, show how it travels behind or around to make the knot. This is an example of what I mean: www.Amazon.com/Pro-Knot-Outdoor-Knots-John-Sherry/dp/0922273227/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1543704017&sr=1-4&keywords=knots Along with the book, get him some carabiners, a shackle, and several ropes of different types (climbing, fishing, paracord, webbing) that are of different thickness. A rope bag to keep it stored would be nice touch and I bet much appreciated by his Mom! ![]() .

Figure out what you want, then check eBay for a good used book cheaper. Rope comes in different colors now. 10 or 20 feet of each would be good with the book.

Can you steer him into Scouting? That's where I learned about knots.

Yup! So was I. Learned a lot of knots from that book when I was a kid. Consider adding a rigging knife. Used for sailing it incorporates a sheepsfoot knife blade and a marlinspike. Some include a shackle key. Invaluable for rope work. Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

Kevin, when I got into sailing, then, subsequently, tree-climbing (as an adjunct to putting together a rig for climbing our boat's mast), I spent a lot of time learning knots and splicing. I've books specific to sailing/boating and to tree-climbing, but, of the general-purpose books I have on knots, this one I think is the best for your needs: What Knot? I particularly like the Flexibound binding. Makes it real easy to use. "America is at that awkward stage. Second. I had the 1985 version when I was a kid. Perfect book for a kid. I can't believe people are recommending ABoK for a 9 year old. ![]() https://www.amazon.com/dp/1338..._apa_i_eXdbCbCPXZ48F Year V

Great choice. My scoutmaster gave me this book years ago, I found it very helpful at that age. I would also recommend going by a sporting goods store and getting some climbing rope cut to a variety of 2-3' lengths and colors. This will aid in practicing and visualizing how each knot works. Seeing "inside" the knot can often be the hardest part of learning to tie.
