The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by entrepreneur Elon Musk, has reported $65 billion in spending reductions during the first six weeks of the Trump administration. DOGE, and Musk in particular, have drawn applause from President Donald Trump but criticism from others who cite concerns about the security of government data and the legality of some of the administration’s actions such as the shuttering of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the dismissal of thousands of federal employees. While DOGE is an advisory body that doesn’t have authority to cut funding or fire people, it’s recommendations have been acted upon by agency officials. Here’s a look at where the agency has recommended the most cuts. Many of the cuts represent ongoing savings because the program or service would have continued for years. The total so far represents a small fraction of the total cuts Musk predicted. Musk intends to trim $2 trillion from the nation’s budget by next year, which many analysts say is unlikely. The federal budget was $6.1 trillion in 2023 with a $1.7 trillion budget deficit. https://www.theepochtimes.com/...eyMeAHspy%2BR6sGI%3D

I applaud the effort to cut the bureaucracy and create a more efficient government, but the reality is that there is only so much the Executive can do. DOGE has already picked the low hanging fruit, or at least flagged it for picking, and they are only at 3.3% of their target. Every billion saved from here on is going to get harder and harder to achieve, because, once the obvious inefficiencies are rectified, the cuts start getting into the hard tissue of government. Most of those cuts will require Congress. They've already said they are not going to cut entitlements, so where will it come from? Defense? Infrastructure? Social Services? Each one of those is a sacred cow to a different group of Republicans. Getting everyone to agree will be a messy business. If anyone can do it, Donald Trump can. But it's a huge hill to climb. A good start, ~$11B/week is, and hats off! That said, if he's going for $2,000B in 52 weeks, that's closer to $40B/week.

Once they get it chopped down I would love to have a gov. Website that has to show any new spending over a designated amount so it’s all in one place and easy to see.

Any savings as a result of DOGE reviews is great. But my biggest concern is unrealistic expectations by the public as a result of any DOGE savings. I saw a post yesterday from a woman who was very happy about DOGE savings because "now President Trump can give all of the senior citizens a big increase in our Social Security." The DOGE savings are great and will help. But anyone who thinks that the DOGE savings alone are going to be enough to fix the huge debt we are running is in a fantasy land.

Seriously? Cutting 1/3 of the $6 trillion budget which will leave us with a surplus? Great! "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor
