Has anyone tried one of those bicycle/elliptical things?
A few days ago I saw two people riding what looked like a cross between a bicycle and an elliptical. It was an odd looking contraption for sure but quite intriguing. It looks like a great machine to work out your arms and legs simultaneously.

The only thing I am a bit unsure about is turning the thing. Has anyone here ridden one? If so what did you think about it?

I saw one for the first time last week. It really stood out since this is not the place you should be riding any kind of bicycle on the road in traffic. The guy appeared to be really fit but looked like he was struggling going up a moderate incline. I was wondering how those things are geared.

The couple I saw riding their elliptical bike thingy seemed to be struggling to keep even a moderate pace. We were on flat ground and they still seemed to be laboring a bit to make their machine move. It looked like a darn good workout but a difficult machine to steer.

I am curious how the gearing is set up. I rode past them too quickly on my bike to get a really good look at the thing and how exactly it worked.

No but I’d like to try one of the peloton bike plus.

My sister was forced to switch to standup ellipticals after being rear-ended several years ago and could no longer ride a standard bike. She has both street and mountain bike variants and I've ridden them both a couple of times. Just a few laps around the block in her neighborhood but no hardcore riding on my part. I didn't have any problems starting, stopping, keeping a straight line, turning, or shifting gears but I was just testing it out of curiosity. I can't speak about any performance aspects but I think the riding style would become intuitive after some practice. Anywhere near you that you can rent one?

My right leg does not bend as far as normal due to a motorcycle accident in 1989, so I cannot ride a bicycle or use a pedaled exercise machine. I wonder if that gadget would allow someone to use it who cannot bend the knee normally.

Not sure what brand the OP is referring to but there is one called ElliptiGO. I owned one of their models several years ago and they have expanded their lineup ever since. It was fun and could give quite the workout. Their models have standard steering and don't work the arms. They are also capable of climbing fairly steep hills. I regularly did 20-40 mile rides while I owned it. I sold mine because we went from about a 3.5 car garage to a small 2 car garage when we bought the new house and I didn't have room for it or half the other things I owned. I am a bicyclist and barely had enough room for my bikes so the ElliptiGO went.
