Thunder and lightning....house goes black.

I pull my trusty Fenix out of my pants pocket, make it to the laundry room and distribute each family member their own charged LED lantern.

We have a quick conversation about remembering that nobody but dad goes near the door if the bell rings, and that instead of my IWB I'd be 'open carrying' in the house until the power went back on.

Boys are playing a game, wife is reading her phone, I verified the battery backup for the Sump Pump is working, fixed a drink... and I am on the internet via Hotspot.

Meanwhile I already got the panicked call from the neighbor across the street who preps for nothing and likely wanted to borrow my 2nd backup generator for his sump pump.

LOL - Feeling kinda useful right now as wife and kids thank me for doing my job.

If the power is out and your doorbell rings you're in the middle of a horror movie and your open carrying won't save you one bit. Wink

It's easy to get complacent. In 64 years I have never been without any of our utility services, Electricity, Water, or Gas for even 24 hours. A few hours... Meh who cares, I guess we are long overdue a panic inducing event Eek

God bless the service providers who brave the worst nature can dish out to keep us going!

My needs are met with several flashlights, a kerosene stove, and a bunch of candles. We did 8 cold winter days with these a few years ago. Eventually I will install a natural gas generator.

"Portable" generator with a household transfer switch, backup sump pump, city water, natural gas.

Worse part of a power failure is wading through the garage to get the generator out.

Back at the end of April we had an ice storm and blizzard blow through and I was without power for six days. You don't realize how much you depend on electricity until you've lost it for several days, but I had plenty of firewood, batteries and other supplies so it was more of a nuisance than anything.

And it’s even worse in the summer; you can always make yourself warmer, but the inverse is far from true.

Topped off all the Milwaukee 12v batts the other day for the lanterns and fan (SWMBO needs her air circulation!). As soon as it was confirmed the hot mess was headed for STL the lanterns were pre-positioned, BoBs put into basement, my belt got the NiteCore and P365. As Ronin said, only I go to the door.

I know what a sump pump is, but thought they were only needed in basements. Not many of those around here.

May be firing up the generator soon. About 2000 customers out of power now in Our town. For now all is fine, backup sump pump works, wi-fi hot spot works and the backup battery for the phones is fully charged. All is well

. We are on a high water table on this side of town. It’s so bad that I have a backup pump that runs off city water and a spare electric one able to be replaced in ten minutes at the most. Pure Michigan!

Been through it. Lasted overnight. Myself and the dog slept in the pool. Her on the steps, and myself right beside with a pillow on the coping. Worst thing was spraying off all over me and going to sleep with that nasty shit all over my face and hair.

What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

I laugh at power outages.
My primary heat is a wood stove, also have a toyotami laser 73 diesel heater with a 250 gal. diesel tank.
In the shed is a 7K generator to keep the lights on, the food cold and frozen and the well pumping.
