What is your traditional New Year food, and what is the ethnic or national origin for this? I'm not sure whether it's German, Polish, maybe Russian, but I'll have some herring in the morning on New Year's Day (goes good with a bialy ). I'll start the slow cooker in the morning, with pork and sauerkraut for later in the day. I forgot to pick up some black eye peas. What will be on your table? הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

My wife's parents always ate pickled pig's feet on New Year's Eve. They claimed it was a German tradition for good luck. I could never do it. I've also got a lot of German on my dad's side of the family, but I never heard about it from him. ------------------------------ "They who would give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin "So this is how liberty dies; with thunderous applause." - Senator Amidala (Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith)

The origin is scots but mangled way beyond recognition. Great somethin granny Muir wanted some haggis, but there's nothing resembling a sheep or a barley growing in the deep south so she made due. So now every Christmas to New Years week my Granny makes Hog Stew. ribs, liver, lights (lungs... still illegal to sell in the US, but she'll make arrangements) slow simmered and then served over rice.

I hear about black eyed peas each year, but Mom always reminds us that we have to have cabbage at new year's for good luck. I've got a head of cabbage here, and some bacon grease in which to fry it tomorrow. God bless America.

Not sure about luck but we usually eat ozoni, mochi, soba and duk (tteok). "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." L.Tolstoy "A government is just a body of people, usually, notably, ungoverned." Shepherd Book

Some interesting dishes have been mentioned. Haggis, hog jowl, pigs' feet -- I think I'll pass on those. I had to do a little searching to get translations for konata's dishes, they sound good. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

That is what my mom always touted. I do have a can of them in my cupboard, but they've been there for years. Not sure they'd be any good. Maybe look for a restaurant offering them tomorrow. I'm not fond of them, but with enough Cayenne pepper they're OK. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

The Latin tradition is 12 grapes, one for each month of the year, but this year I’m starting a new tradition. The 12 nuts of New Years. Especially with how 2020 has gone, having 12 whole, not halves, large extra crunchy peanuts and 12 whole cashews for extra good luck this year! -Dtech __________________________ "I've got a life to live, people to love, and a God to serve!" - sigmonkey "Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value." - Albert Einstein "A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition" ― Rudyard Kipling

I made pancit noodles for long life. Full of Maggi that has MSG (mega super good), so the long life assertion is debatable. ...that I will support and defend...
