He obviously DID NOT go through his bags with a strong flashlight like a cop looking for drugs.
If traveling out of the USA - and some states within the USA - you have to do just that…SEARCH!!

I have range bags and I have luggage. My range bags are just that but in my luggage, EVERY time I travel I have weapons and ammo. Usually, multiple weapons and ammo. I bet most of us do the exact same thing.
It all needs to be accounted for. If for nothing else, to make sure I know the exact spot it’s in if I need them.

The TSA is a random collection of low IQ morons.
Once I flew to a family member’s state to hunt. I took a Rem 700 and S&W *626. No problem at all leaving my state.

The TSA guy on the way back was looking at my bolt action and the revolver like an ape staring at a monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
It took a full 15-20 minutes for this dolt to realize that yes the guns were unloaded and weren’t going to fire mid flight.
A bolt action and a revolver!!

What gets me about these successive incidents is that they all seem to happen as the accused is leaving the country in question. Nobody searching bags on the way in, just when you leave? Are they trying to keep people from smuggling bananas out? Or am I missing something?

Well, it might make sense that the airport security at the airport one is departing would check and make sure that one isn’t carrying anything that would endanger the flight. When one arrives in a country, the folks there may take the approach that, “Well nothing happened on the flight and the folks where it departed must have checked it anyway, so as long as we have no reason to expect contraband, rock on.” Sure, they might look really hard ay incoming bags, and some places probably do, but a lot may not.

None of this is to say I think TSA was responsible to protect this guy from himself, just that I can understand why folks might be more likely to be caught with small contraband items on the way out of a country than on the way in.

I am also not blaming TSA for this guy's dumb mistake, but it does help reinforce the perception of gross incompetence by that agency.

sigh. i just got my daughter's boyfriend in trouble at the airport. he wanted a sling bag to carry water and snacks. i cleaned one of mine out. was like why is there a loose round in here? anyways, i cleaned it out and looked through it. so did he.

well he went to work today and the xray found two rounds in the lining. he got detained and had to explain.

So what I am taking from these stories, including the ones from the Bahamas, is this:

Never, never, ever, cross your range/gun bags with your regular luggage, even if you think you have gone through it with a fine-toothed comb.

It's like the rule about never pointing a gun, even an "empty" gun, at anything, unless you intend to destroy that thing.

If you need to go buy another piece of luggage to go on vacation, go buy it! Whatever it costs, it will be a whole lot less than the legal trouble and time you will spend trying to explain to authorities, or the time you will spend in court or prison.

KEEP YOUR RANGE BAGS AND YOUR TRAVEL LUGGADE AS FAR APART AS POSSIBLE!

Don't even let them in the same closet.
