As usual, in the end it's all about the money

"Families in the 2015 Charleston, S.C., church massacre have settled with the Department of Justice (DOJ) for some $88 million over a faulty gun background check that allowed to the shooter to buy the firearm he used"

And whose $88 million is going to be transferred to the lawyers?

I meant, 'families'?

Its going to come from the personal finances of the inept DOJ employees, right?

Right?

Those committing the deeds should be on the hook, not the taxpayer. I still don't understand why employees of the government get that protection simply because it's the government.

Doesn't work that way in the private sector.

There is a secret about that shooting that is never published in the press... one of the men killed in that shooting pretty much always carried a gun, his son came to the chief of police a few days after the shooting and asked about his father's handgun. It was found in his car outside the church. Part of S.C. concealed carry law is that one can't carry in a church unless you have the approval of those in charge of the church.... why this man left his gun in his car I don't know, but I sure would like to know.

If you want to know how I know this, I heard it directly from the man who was the the chief of police of Charleston at the time of the shooting.

Unless they have metal detectors at the entrances of the facilities, who is to know otherwise? Concealed is concealed, right?

As appalling as this settlement is, it is good news for federal firearms licensees.

This is the precedent that the licensee is not liable if the FBI (or in Virginia, the State Police) screw up the background check and approve the sale of a firearm to a prohibited person who then uses that gun to commit a crime like mass murder.

It is bad news for the survivors of other mass murderers (e.g., Pulse nightclub, San Bernadino Islamofascists). They did not get a massive pay out from the fed.gov.

Obviously he didn't have his gun because he was following the law. Violation would certainly have caused loss of his permit. This stupid law cost his life.
