I have a vintage (1980s) Rolex that I received as a graduation gift back in the day. It was engraved on the back of the case with my name and the year. How much do you think this affects the resale value?

abnmacvPersonally it would be cool to have a piece of history attached to an old Rolex. Jewelry store selling used Rolex watches might have a different view.

It depends totally on the watch, the owner, the message and the other " stuff"
Paper work, receipt, box, manuals .
It's all in the equation.

71 TRUCKIn my opinion it would depend on the. Model.
Let's say a Stainless Steel Daytona vs a Stainless Steel Datejust.
Because the Daytona is still a highly sought after Model,in my opinion not that much as compared to lets say a Datejust.
As some have said just replace the case back, however I am not sure how specific the case back is to the watch model. If I am not mistaken Rolex case backs are engraved on the inside. I don't know if the information is specific to that exact watch.

I'd hang onto the original at least through the sale. The new one will be obvious due to age/patina, and the buyer may want the original as part of a deal for completeness. If not, it will be a nice keepsake.

2AdefenderKeep the watch as original as possible if you want it to hold value. That would mean no replacement case back.
