They eventually caught the thief, but man, people this stupid shouldn't be allowed to live (yeah yeah, hyperbole).

No clue...

I haven't air traveled for over 10 years. So, what rule is it?

bigwagonIf I had $10K in cash at the airport, I wouldn't be carrying the envelope in my hand. I would have it in a backpack or briefcase and I would leave it in that during screening. There is no "rule" that you have to remove cash from another bag.

Only rule is you have to declare if over $10k (international flights) but it doesn’t require you to be a moron putting it in public view. I flew to Can-eh-duh with slightly under $10k cash when I moved there because they wanted a 45 day hold on checks to open an account. 0 day hold if I opened acct with cash. I can assure you nobody saw the cash until I was at the bank.

Put everything in a bin and send it through the machine.
In my hands is exactly where that cash would have stayed. They can manually screen it, but it’s not leaving my sight.

Dusty78Can’t have anything in your hands or pockets even paper. I usually stuff my wallet, phone, keys, etc... in my backpack so I have nothing on me.

Not if you're Pre-Check. If you're TSA pre-check, you can have whatever you want in your pocket as long as it's not metal.

wrightdI wouldn't trust those people with any large amount of cash on my person. Large cash scares me not so much because of bad guys but ironically because of the good guys who legally or otherwise steal it. These days unfortunately a uniform and a government paycheck doesn't seem to attract as many honorable people as it should. I guess there's nothing new under the sun but that just plain blows.

If you go through the body scanner, you can't have even a slip of paper in a pocket and I'm sure they would not allow you to carry something in your hands.

Yes, they would. Done it before. Boarding pass, passport and other small items like that. I think I've done it with my wallet before.
I have Global Entry which gives me pre-check so I haven't been through the body scanners in a while but when I have I have almost always had something in my hands.
They can see what's in your hands. Something in your pocket they can not see and can alert on the machine.

Yes you can. I travel often with a lot of cash (for business) and a nice watch, the watch stays on my arm, my wallet in my hand. They manually check both after I go through the booth. Everything else goes into the bin. A lot of people don’t know this like the idiot with $9k in cash that’s the subject of this thread.

The cash isn't the TSA's business. When I travel, my wallet, cash, phone and wrist watch go into a special pocket in my carry-on and not dropped in an open tray or bowl. The latter just invites sticky hands and wandering eyes. There's nothing about money that requires special screening or transparency to TSA.
