Sea levels rise a foot in 7 years???

Seems like that much ice cap melt would shut down the Gulf Stream and trigger a return of the ice age…

Wait, would that be the ice age they were warning us about back in the `70s?

The mini ice age in Europe was linked to a shut down of the Gulf Stream. Not sure what really caused it, but a theory was that a massive melt of the ice cap could do it.

Not to pick on you at all, but it is a hypothesis not a theory. We all misuse the word theory all the time but to our detriment.

A theory is something that has been proven with much supporting data. A hypothesis is a possible explanation which has not been proven.

Scientists hypothesize ice cap melting could shut down the Atlantic warm water circulation, and they hypothesize such a thing could cause glaciation in the northern hemisphere.

It is only a hypothesis that rising CO2 levels cause global temperature increases.

If we call it a theory we give it too much status as truth.

The ocean conveyer belt system is vast and instrumental in keeping the planet from slipping into a cold period.

It relies on salinity and temperature differences between polar and equatorial waters to function- it’s just as important that cold polar water comes towards the equator as the warm water towards the poles. The introduction of a lot of melt water would surely have a negative effect. Even a little ice age would be catastrophic.

What time do you think it will happen?

I am not worried about Florida flooding as much as I am about it tipping over.

As a Kid they kept telling us a big Earthquake was going to hit California, causing it to break off and fall in the ocean.

Sure wish that one would come true now.

some years ago I saw a hypothetical sudden breakage to the Mississippi drainage lowering it along much of the length to form a large central sea between east & west. The time table has escaped my memory.

Will happen in eastern California and Arizona first (Gulf of California overflow).

I'm surprised there wasn't more reaction to this bit of rocket science just a few weeks ago.

This bunch thinks we can set things straight by pumping surface water and moving it around the earth to change the balance.

This was on CNN but seemed to die down quickly for obvious reasons. These scientists seem to overlook that water gets recycled right back to where it came from in short order, among other things.

From the article:
“Earth’s rotational pole actually changes a lot,” said lead study author Ki-Weon Seo, a professor in the department of Earth science education at Seoul National University in South Korea, in a news release. “Our study shows that among climate-related causes, the redistribution of groundwater actually has the largest impact on the drift of the rotational pole.”

The Earth's North pole (center of rotation) moves in a circle of the sky about 15° in diameter with a period of 25,700 years (I think). It's called the Precession of the Equinoxes or the Axial Precession. In centuries past the Pole Star has been Deneb (in Cygnus) and Vega (in Lyra).

I 2nd what VBVAGUY says. Stop these idiots dead in their tracks when the topic comes up and watch the confusion. Explain to them that the government also continues to invest in projects around our coast lines....ask them why build if the ocean is gonna destroy it?
